Am I imagining things? Are ZDDP levels going up?

Looking at UOA reports lately I've seen that Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra 5W-30 are now showing about 975ppm of Zinc. That seems like significantly more than we were seeing not all that long ago.

Those numbers seemed pretty typical.

Now these have the higher numbers.

Ive looked at countless UOA's and VOA's of Rotella T6, and they have different ZddP levels. Much more drastic than this, I dont think theyve changed the formula.

I really question why anyone would use Blackstone for analysis. Their numbers are allll over the place, and we've seen entirely too many reports that didn't actually match the oil that it was supposed to be.

So who is place to use then?

More [censored] for ya' regarding API and Zn and P levels. If Zn and P levels were as important as the API would have you believe there would be more control over these levels. So tell me then WHAT DOES THE API REALLY MEAN? Oh right, another money grab.

Anyway, I've been using Toromont for a variety of reasons, they are somewhat local (30 minute drive), cheap and I can walk in and talk with the lab techs. I love it!

I'm speculating changes in equipment, calibration, procedures, and/or QA at Blackstone. If you take a look at this post:

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1896473&page=2

You'll see BobFout posting a DEC-2009 VOA of Mobil 1 0W-40 with Zn and P levels below what Mobil has published. Further down on the page his MAY-2010, 5100 mile UOA shows higher Zn and P measurements.

The only things I can think of to explain his results would be: 1) Residual Amsoil 5W-40 (his previous oil fill); or, 2) Changes at the lab.

My MAY-2010 VOA of Mobil 1 10W-40 High Mileage:

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1883932#Post1883932

was a close match to the documentation in the Mobil Oils PDF.

Maybe they've, "tuned up?"

I take it you feel Blackstone's testing is reliable enough to make that conclusion, then?

I like Oil Analyzers.
