I was looking up a cross reference for a relative car, AC Delco A1615C and was amazed at all the brands that cross to it. It was from a 2003 Hasting master filter catalog.

and I know I missed some. And before you respond, I know they are not all manf. Its obvious by the parts numbers who makes certain ones.
 
Must be good money made selling air filters. Thought I had checked all manufactures before I purchased the NAPA GOLD but I guess I was wrong.

Aren't those mostly brands and not manufacturers. Some may even be regional brands not available nationally and others may be defunct brands at that.

Like oil filters there's a small # of actual makers and many brands out there.

I suspect there is decent money in filters. I think they are relatively easy to mass produce. But filter prices seem to be disproportionately higher than say oil filters and I don't see anything that would suggest they cost notably more to manufacture. In many cases I would think it's a simple matter of pleated paper w/ molded foam-rubber surround cast around it.
