Hello All,

I am not an expert on Cars, have a Rav4 2006, have recently found this forum have comes across some really good information.

My original tires were done at 26000 miles, so at that time with limited knowledge and time constrain i ended up with Good Year Wrangler HP 215/70 16 99H from Sams club for $ 113 each tire and $ 15 installation

Last week, a nail entered in the side wall of my tire, fortunately i was due for service and tire rotation every 5000 miles, and the Peps boy told me that since the nail is in the side wall the tire is unrepairable. ( I dont have membership now for Sams club, and i understand they would refund me prorate for a tire but for that i need to buy the membership, i dont this that is worth it).

I requested him to use the spare for now to install the tire.

I went to sears and they looked at the other tires and said if i was in your position, looking at the other tires i would replace all the 4 tires.

i know replacing one does not make sense and 2 would be ok, but since others are almost done so then why not change the all 4 ( Better to be safe than sorry).

so i started to research for tires and have went through many threads in this forum for tires.

some of the forums recommends Bridgestone dualer H/t 687 d, now i got really excited when i went to firestone website today and it said buy 3 and get one free.

but on tire rack it does not have good reviews, then there is another recommended tire Bridgestone Alvenza, that has good reviews on tire rack, but one of the reviews say it is not good for snow and ice conditions, so i am really confused.

i am currently at 52000 miles so the good year tire only gave 26000 miles and that could be the driving i understand, but then i have not seen as that tire recommended tire in this forum, so i am ready for something new.

My car is 2006 base model V4,
your input would be appreciated.

Regards

Several years back I got a road hazard on tires I got at sams previously and went to Sams even though I was not a member. They couldn't fix it, as the "scalloping" inside had worn from driving on the rim too long. They sold me a new tire, prorated on the tread depth of my old one, cheap. And, I repeat, I was not a member anymore.

The installation money included road hazard and I don't think there's a way to opt out. Give it a shot!

If you have AWD you want the same brand (diameter) tire all around if you can at all help it.

26k on any set of tires is quite poor. Might want to revisit your driving style.

I would utilize the reviews at tire rack and tires.com and see what you find. We have had good luck with michelin, pirelli, dunlop and briedgestone in all NJ weather.

cooper cs4, great tires, 80k mi wear rating (t rated) and they are reasonably priced, of course they will be more then the cheapest tires you will find but with 80k tread wear rating and the fantastic performance they are a real value.

What do YOU want from your tires? Longest tread life? Best wet traction? Best snow traction? Quietest ride?

You can look at the tirerack.com survey results for your type of tire you choose (passenger, light truck, etc), select your size, and select the characteristics you want (I know, kind'a clumsy, but good info). They only list the makes and models they sell, so you can come back here for more recommendations. The Cooper CS4 is one good one that Tirerack does not sell, but they sell many good ones.

If any tire dealer there will match prices, try printing up an order form from a very low cost seller like onlinetires.com, add shipping and installation, and see how close they'll come to that price. And check the cost to buy from tirerack and have Walmart* or another shop install.

Nokian WR G2 SUV

The best All Season Tires I have ever owned.
A set of four will give you over 50,000 year round miles.

Good Luck, Jim

Cooper CS4 i am not able to find them in my size my tire size is 215/70 r 16 what am i missing here ?

also i was researching about H vs T rating, lot of people are ok to go with t, but some say dont go lower than the recommended H, so confused.

Peps boys have but 3 get one free on tires that are in stock.

they have bf Goodrich touring and cooper discover t tire, do you think this is good time to pull the tigger ?

Firestone Destination LE
Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza
General Grabber HTS
Michelin LTX M+S2

These are your best all season light truck/suv class tires out there. Not sure if they are available in your required size but if they are I recommend these 4. All of them are excellent in the snow and will last 40-60K+. The Destination LE's and Grabber HTS tires will be much cheaper than the Alenza's and the M+S2's. I am a huge Destination LE fan and highly recommend them. Any of the ones listed though will be a good choice.

Goodyear Wrangler HP is one of the worst tires ever made! Especially when you have to drive in snow.

If you don't mind running a passenger car tire vs a light truck/suv class tire on your Rav4 check out the Hankook Optimo 727. I believe they are available in your size and they are an excellent tire for year round use. One of the best car tires in the snow I have ever used. They last a long time and give a nice quiet smooth ride.

I do agree that it's the owners decision on what they want a tire to do. People are asking alot of an all season tire and all season tires are a mixed bag.

Some handle better, some ride better, some have better hydroplaning resistance and some do better in snow and foul weather while some actually act like a performance tire while others last a long time(i.e. 80,000 miles). And some tires do decent in a wider variety of catigories but not great in any one catigory. And there are the "NEW" low rolling resistacne tires(LRR tires)...What is the OP looking for? I know, this is confusing as everything has a tradeoff!

I'm going to do a bit more research myself for this situation and get back to ya. I'll be looking for folks with same gen RAV w/4 cyl fwd only(I am assuming that it's not AWD!) And too, folks that drive in similar climates. Snow/ice traction is always a concern.

I just want to add that, I once had a SAM's Club membership and purchaced tire while under the membership. Although I did not renew my membership, they[SAM's] still honored my RHW as well as lifetime balance/rotation as long as I kept my receipt. I don't know if they have changed their policy or if it's just store dependent or area dependent.

The OP may want to consider the cost difference in getting another membership along with the "pro-rating" of one tire and maybe even the purchace of another tire and just get 2 new tires...before jumping into another 4 tires from somewhere else(if you don't really need 4 tires)...JMO!

My edit timed out and I may have missed something here!

Are the G/Y Wranglers also worn out at 26K mils and in need of all 4 tires being replaced anyway???

I was in a situation where i had an unrepairable tire. The other 3 were in good shape. Many miles left. I bought a used tire from ebay that matched the other 3. The tire was in great shape. No repairs similar build date. Got another 35000 miles before all 4 were worn out.

ok so from my research and also calling the dealer was helpful.

the Sansone toyota said that they also install yokohoma or Dunlop with S speed rating, he mention that S is also what has been recommended to them from Toyota on their internal website.

so other than Sams club and Costco no one else has the issue with installing the T rated tires.

so finally i have comes down to 2 tires but now i am confused with the load,

the bf goodrich says the max load is 1554 and the good year says it is 1709.

the OEM tire is 1709, so would 1554 would be ok ?

I dont have the 3rd seat.

good reviews about Goodrich on discount tire, and ok rivews on tire rack for good year.

Remove
BFGoodrich
Long Trail T/A Tour
Outlined White Letters

Goodyear
Assurance CS Fuel Max
Blackwall

any suggestions ?

the alvenza is my first choice but it seems pretty expensive

The difference in maximum load is a function of the maximum inflation pressure being lower for the S-rated tire.

I don't know that I'd be comfortable putting S-rated tires on a vehicle. You may not be going the speed that's associated with the speed rating, but there are differences in the construction of the tires that buy you an extra margin of safety with a higher speed rating.

There's a bit of confusion here. Tire sizing is standardized and while there are slight differences in the 3 commonly used sizing systems, the "1554#" doesn't appear in any of them - EXCEPT:

There is a rule that says that if a P metric tire is being used in a light truck application (meaning a pickup, van, or on a trailer) you have to reduce the stated load carrying capacity by 10%. If you divide 1709# by 1.1, you'll get 1554#!

- BUT -

That apply to both the Goodrich and the Goodyear!

- And, No! The difference in load rating is not the result of the speed rating.

Personally, I like the idea of H speed rated tires as a minimum in ALL applications. The construction of H rated tires is a big leap over S and T rated as far as resistance to failure is concerned.

Both of the tires that i am considering are T rated, i am not considering S, but the dealer does put it all the time from what i understand on Rav4.

H is good to have, but the only tire available for all season in my size with H rating are Goodyear Wrangler HP and Bridges tone Duler 687

Both of them have around 300 thread count and no warranty and very bad reviews, i have experience on both of them and none of them last more than 26000 miles.

and during my current research, this seems to be the normal for these tires so it is just not my driving.

i have firestone affinity on my corolla that came with certified purchase of vehicle.

have put over 22 thousand miles in a year and still look like the tires have long way to go.

It is quite misleading to generalize that 26k on any set of tires is poor. Not all tires are designed for long life. Not all driving conditions will allow for long tire life. Tires are sacrificial and will need to be replaced.

Ive never gotten less than 50k out of a set of tires. Even when I dump them at 7-8 years due to UV cracking, I often have >50% tread after 30-50k miles.

My 135i has performance tires, and sure, they will wear faster Im certain, but this application is not what the OP is running. There is no good reason to get such low mileage out of a set of tires in the environment and roads in NJ. Even OE tires.

Driving style ha much to do with tire life, and something is wrong here.
