My wife forwarded me a link to a great website detailing dog foods and the quality thereof.

The lower grade foods are quite shocking when you read what's in them.

Anyone who owns a dog should check these lists out.

Hope it's helpful to some of you.

Dog food information

I’ll tell you, I will never buy Costco Kirkland dog food again or any dog food made by Diamond.

Our dog started to lose weight and had no energy. Took him to our vet and the first thing out of the vet’ after examining him was “Do you use Costco dog food?” The answer was yes. To make a long story short, we notified Costco of the situation and their dog food manufacturer (Diamond) contacted us and told us that their food did not cause the colitis (Interesting to note, if you do a google search for Diamond dog food, you will find several recalls already). I told them that I have my vet’s report and they could have our dog examined by their vet, which they never did. So after over $1700.00 worth of vet bills, the only offer of “sorry” was a $100 gift card. Give me a break! They refused to have our dog examined by their vet of their choosing. Our vet said Costco food was the cause. So who are you going to believe?

BTW, the one and only time I do not buy dog food that is listed in the Whole Dog Journal’s list of dog food to buy.

Good site and worth reading if you care a lot for you pets. Some of the highly advertised dog food that many folks assume is good, is real garbage, with the first ingredient "chicken by-products", meaning guts, feet, heads, feathers, etc. After that its lots of grains, none of which are particularly good for dogs. Certainly if its the best one can afford, its better than nothing.

If it doesn't say, at least, "Chicken meal, meat meal," MEAL being the operative work, its not good stuff.

Kirkland's brands both get 4 stars on that site.

Take it from a dog trainer, this information is valuable. The main things to watch out for in your dogs (and cats) food are corn, wheat, and soy products (although some are ok if they are added for vitamin reasons). Also, if you change your dog's food, please remember to switch it slowly, especially if your pup has not been on top-quality food (the exception to this is if you are starting them on a RAW diet, in which case you should not add dry food to it). Changing from a diet of meat by-product, corn and wheat to a high quality diet can have.. um... "explosive" results, if you get my meaning. Start mixing in the new food slowly over the course of 7-14 days depending on the dog. Do this even if it means you have to purchase a small bag of your old food. Also, in dry food, if your pet will still eat it, add some water to it. It helps them stay hydrated and improves digestion. If you give your dog 1 cup of food, try adding 1/2 a cup of water.

Hope your pup is feeling better. Sounds like it was terrible for you both.

Thanks tinman ~ good points to remember.

I noticed the Kirkland (Costco) dog food is at 4 stars too. powayroger, so sorry your dog was so ill while on it. Is he OK now?

Wal-Mart used to have a dog food called just, "Dog Food." No brand, just the words. I fear.

Anything called "by products" is stuff that would make a billy goat puke.

Read the ingredient labels, most of the popular cat and dog foods; 9 lives, Friskies, etc, are mostly warmed over slop.

My cat uses some cheap stuff. I tried to get her to use a highly rated food that my parents use and she won't eat it.

She will not eat ANYTHING but that food.

I wanted to get her onto something better. Ugh.

Lol, I ate Burger King for dinner tonight, my dog ate a 5 star meal which I probably should have joined him as his meal was way better nutritionaly than mine, you are absolutly right..
