The "thing" wasn't posing an immediate threat to life as far as we know. If it was an enemy bomber then sure.

Would be a hell of a story if one of those flaming debris just happen to hit a herd of cattle, an oil well on a rancher's property, or somebody's family member who's out biking. We're not at war, we don't need to take unnecessary risks.

It would also be a "pretty bad story" if 1 or 3 or 5 of these balloons were carrying EMPs or nuclear devises and crippled our nation.

And, since we apparently don't know who owns them or where they originated from, or anything much, it would be a non-state actor attack with no return address. Or worse is we mis-identify the true aggressor and attack the wrong people. History doesn't always repeat but it often rhymes.

They later realize they have to return the pilot (whose son will play an important role in space exploration in the future) in order to avoid changing history.

It was the first episode that dealt with time travel.

There's also the movie, Star Trek, the Voyage Home. Where if I recall, using the Klingon Bird of Prey and earth's gravity pull, slung itself into time travel.

Yes, it’s Pico balloons. There’s going to be a lot of interest in this. The clubs have been around for some time. Ham radio crossed with small balloons.
