Finally got around to cutting open the three PF64's that were installed by the dealer during their regular maintenance over the past 1.5 years. All looked in good shape, no tears, no major issues. The new 'ecore' style has a tighter cage arrangement. I certainly doesn't look like media could blow through the cage like some of the earlier ecore filters (yes I had 2 with torn media over the years).
The traditional "Wix" looking filter design is well built, tigher pleats and more media and also has a top mount bypass valve vs the bottom bpv. If I had to choose OEM filters, I'd go with the this filter.
Each filter got around 3-4k miles max each, before they were switched out halfway through the oil life monitor (50-60%). I then switched to one of my Champion COS10590 filters and Castrol 5w30 Dexos1 Gen2 jugs, a stash of which will last me for another 3 years.
