This afternoon I had something very strange on my 08 Mariner (Escape, Tribute).
I started the car, put it in gear, pressed on the gas pedal and no increase in RPMs. Upon investigation I discovered the clip holding the cable to the pedal mechanism was gone.
I did vacuum the car a bit prior and the mat did move and am wondering if I knocked it off
