I don't want to get too far off topic but regarding the piston slap noise. It can definitely sound similar to a lifter tick depending on the engine. My Subaru has the piston slap noise when the engine is cold. In my case it sounds more like a light engine knock. The issue is pretty well known as Subaru issued various documents about it. The piston is designed with very short "skirts". I suspect the GM engines are designed in a similar manner. Really there is no remedy for it if the slap is minor and goes away when the engine warms up. If it does worsen however, the only way to repair would be major engine work to replace the piston/wrist pin involved.
I know I've heard many 3.1/3.4L GM engines with the slap noise.
