I'm curious as to the feedback I will get.
2010 Crown Vic. Been sitting for 2 yrs in the decommissioning lot.
-Tires are the Goodyear ultra Grip police speed rated snows, and have approx 8-9 32nds of tread. Overall they are cupped from lack of proper rotations, and due to sitting are out of balance.
-Brakes had 6 32nds of pad remaining on the rear brakes and they were seized in their caliper hangers. Fronts were low at around 3 or 4 32nds but passable and were not quite stuck in their hangers but also not very free either.
-Rotors were very nice and thick but had overall surface rust and deformations.
-Wheel bearings, and axle bearings not inspected at first.
Symptom: When applying the brakes, a warped and loud vibration was felt in the car. More sound than vibration. This would continue 20 seconds after letting off the pedal. Honestly the sounds I got reminded me of landing in a jet where they just used the ground braking instead of the reverse thrust. Ya all know how warped and weird it sounds / feels?
1.) I inspected and regreased all 4 police brake pads and got them freed up on their caliper brackets. The sound and vibration was still present but now only when pressing the pedal, and when you let off the issue went away instantly confirming the pads were just stuck.
2.) After a few hundred miles and after the rust visually cleaned up on the rotors, the sound did not get any better, and frankly got a bit worse. Maybe mind over matter but I truly think it got progressivly worse.
3.) I assumed the old police pads could have been aged, or possibly prior overheated, so I decided to remove the rotors have them turned, and put new semi metallic pads on all 4 positions. The vibration level and sound got much worse. I bedded the brakes into the new rotor surface and it was a painful procedure. Sounded like the car was going to grind itself apart.
4.) For no other reason I jacked the car back up and felt for any wear or play in the front wheel bearings, and also the rear axle bearings, nothing was found.
I will be amazed if anyone gets this. Thru trial and error, component swapping, and having no other ideas, I was able to diagnose and resolve the issue. 2 weeks on and off trying to figure this out.
