I hear a lot of people state the color of varnish or lack thereof on their engine. Why does this even matter?

My 200k mile Civic has gold - dark tinge but mechanic (good one) who recently adjusted valves stated motor was very clean etc when cover was off. I use dino at 5k/interval.

A gold, even darkish gold patina on metal surfaces at 200K is nothing to worry about. I do know where you are coming from, it seems everyone wants factory new silver gray shiny metal on all surfaces.

You are correct, if you don't have sludge, don't have sticky build up, don't have gummy ring packs, don't have nasty valve stems it doesn't matter what color the metal has changed to.

Call me crazy but wouldn't that thin layer of varnish possibly even help reduce wear? I'd be more worried if I opened up my engine and found the parts all bone dry!
