Bar jokes are a staple of vaudeville comics. Most are banal and silly. Johnny Carson and his guests told hundreds of them. They usually ended with a quick roll on the drum so the audience knows the joke is over. Here is one (probably) real.
Two weary young travellers enter a bar in Casablanca for a cold beer one sultry july afternoon . Sonny (real name) and his companion (maybe me) take a seat at the bar. Soon they are joined by a comely lady in a red dress. Sonny asks her name. She replys with a French accent, 'Layla' and after a quick pause adds , 'mostly Lay'. She points to a room up above the bar. While Sonny ruminates about her flirtations his vigilant friend notices an odd masculine manner about the lady. The comrad leans over and whispers to Sonny, 'you don't want what she has'. The two quickly exit the bar laughing at their afternoon bar joke.
