I just got a 98 subaru legacy brighton awd wagon. It ha the 2.2l boxer, 5speed manual with 152,500mile. I was looking in the manual that the oil is 7.5k oci's. It says 5w30 below 100 degrees, or 10w30/40. and it states thinner oil to be choosen for fuel efficency, heavier oil for engine protection and lubracation. so it seems that subaru wants a heavier oil to be used. also it says it is requemended to use sae30wt, sae40wt, 10w-50, 20w-40, 20w-50 under severe operation. I was wondering what you guys have to say?

I have been running my Brighton 2.2L on 5w20 and 5w30 for the past 50k or so. Runs like a champ. Mine is almost at 190K now.

Search the used oil analysis forum.
NA Subies seem to do just fine on 5w30s.
I used GC for a number of changes in our Forester, based upon that common bit of lore that Subarus are better off with a thicker oil.
I have since began using much thinner thirty grades, like the current Synpower fill, based upon the Subaru used oil analysis I've seen in that forum.
Incidentally, the OMs for both of our Subes have exactly the same oil recommendations as yours, although both also say that a starburst 5w30 is prefered.

You're good to go with 5w30. Non-turbo Subaru engines are pretty easy on oil, and the 2.2 liter is legendary with its almost bulletproof reliability. Do the routine maintenance and address the basic needs of the engine and it'll just keep going and going

I've owned Subarus with 2.2 litre engines for 15 years now. I have them serviced by subaru specialists, and myself of course. Distillation of all that experience: 10W40 is the best weight for these engines. And use regular conventional oil.

I go 3-3.5k on my friends '96 Legacy Brighton with the EJ22
He lives in the city and has many trips under 5 miles.
It seems to love the Mobil Super 5000 5w30.

I'm on my first run with my '02 Outback.
I plan on running a 5w30 conventional for the same 3-3.5k intervals in my EJ25.
I currently am running Navi-gard 5w30 as it was free, with a Purolator filter.
After this run I plan on switching to Pennzoil conventional.

I run 5K most of the time. Planning on 7K this time and will send to Blackstone for a used oil analysis.

SoA had those recommendations up until the beginning of the 2011 model year.
