97 Honda Civic 1.6L

1997 Honda Civic del sol, 1.6L non-VTEC, 5-speed manual, 197,000 miles. The car has a cold-air intake and performance exhaust(no catalytic conv.) Just bought the car and it seems to run great.(I am very pleased with 38 mpg)

Right now it has Chevron Supreme 5w30 w/ a Wix filter.

I am wondering what the BITOG community thinks this car would like for oil. I am looking for a cheaper oil that can be run 3-5K. Good value oils that are readily available are: Chevron Supreme, Shell, and Trop Artic. With the Shell and TA being the cheapest.

Being that the car doesn't have a cat. on it, would it be wise to spice up one of the above oils with an additive that is heavy on Moly, Phos., and Zinc....? If so, what additive...?

I would use the Formula Shell or the Chevron, that engine will do great with any oil though.

Hondas typicly like just about any oil that you can find on sale as long as it the oil the the owners manual calls for. ExampleSH/SG/SJ/SL/SM). 5W30 or 10W30 with your mileage should be just fine.

Valvoline Maxlife 5w30 and a Wix filter... Don't be a cheapskate when buying motor oil....

Just picked up some 49 cent (post rebate) Shell at checker's auto, so it looks like I will run a case of that through it first.

What are some peoples opinion about adding some additives to this oil(moly,phos,zinc...)?

There's really no need to add any additives to it. In my B18 I just use a maintenance dosage of Auto-RX and I use Fuel Power 3000 in the gas and I think that's way more than enough.
