I have a 97 Honda Accord 4 cylinder v-tech with 208k everything original except maintenance items (timing belt etc). It developed a leak around 175k, but still goes 5k at least with no need to add oil, just a very small leak, and I hate oil leaks or any leaks for that matter. I used conventional oil for 125k at least, Castrol or Valvoline whichever was on sale. Then I started working on the road and converted over to synthetic oil, still used whatever on sale and used SyperTech a lot with 7500 OCI, I noticed during this time I was getting varnish build up, so I started used Mobil and done the 15k OCI, which I think is way to long for this car with so many miles, the reason I say that is the oil filter was very heavy. I also used Fram filters when using the conventional, but always preferred a wicks, or purelator. Looking back I don't think I could have done anything different to change the outcome of this engine, I am very happy with it still (commute 80 mile round trip each day) still using synthetic or semi-synthetic with a 7500 OCI (Valvoline max-life, Mobil 1, Castrol etc). I'm thinking next on the Motor Craft semi-synthetic as it's nice and cheap, and also from reading on here... also may try the PP. My question is will a 5w-20 suffice for this older engine (spec says 5w30) I didn't see a 5w30 while browsing the oil isle ? I thought about running a cleaner in the engine, however I have had no problems so far, and while not being scared I just don't see the point. The EGR and accompanying lines did cake up with carbon, which I learned is going to happen with this engine around 125k, so I cleaned them out good. Is there any type of chemical cleaner I could induce into the lines via vacuum would keep this carbon problem at bay ?
If I can 300,000-350,000 I want to replace the car with a newer accord same 4 cylinder motor or whatever update platform they have. My wife had a Odyssey with the V6, I like the 4 cylinder better, she replaced the van with a 06 accord with the 4 cylinder, while looking she kept on tempting the v6 cars, I had to really keep on her she better get a 4 cylinder if she really wants to improve gas mileage, she did listen.
