Comments: Sodium is washing out of the system nicely. It was residual additive in that oil you used back in August 2009(castrol HM 10w30). Silicon is up a little in this sample, but this type of oil uses silicon as an additive, and that's the reason silicon has been boosted in the cautionary range. Your true silicon level(from dirt) is more like 10 ppm, which is fine. The TBN read on the low side at 1.6, so a little active additive remains. But wear continues to look great, so this oil is getting the job done for your Volvo. Try 12,000 miles next time. The engine and oil can both take it.

I can tell the Red Line has cleaned the engine up some, but the turbo on the car leaks more with this oil. It's always wet with hanging oil and few drops have made it to the floor. Do you all think running their 5w30 or 5w40 would help out with this? I also maybe getting a new job that would require an hour and 45 minute drive both ways all highway driving 75 to 80 mph.

Looks good. From conversations Ive had with Dave at RL Id go with the 10w40 in your app to see if you get less oil sweat from the turbo. Should be good to just below 0F if I recall correctly from Dave. I run 10w30 RP below 0F quite often and have not seen elevated wear. Id also think that a 10w would give a little less oil past the loose areas given your possible sustained higher oil temps from your possible new commute.

Wow you have a good engine on your hands, I don't think 5w40 would be a bad idea in any way. try a good run of that and see. Either way you engine likes RL.

SL8R, I'd have to look at it harder. Last time I looked I really couldn't tell, it was pretty wet all over.

As far as the 10w40 and 5w40 go, I know the big difference is 10w40 has the molybdenum and the 5w40 does not. I'm not sure if molybdenum is good in these cars. I've read that the molybdenum can pack around the rings causing blow by. So I'm not sure if the moly is a benefit or not.

I've also thought about rotella t6 5w40. I know a lot of people use it in these cars, but I think red line may fit me better because I like longer oci's. I think the red line is more robust and burns off less being better for the car's pcv system.

Lots' of moly in RL 0W-30 also...

I emailed Dave at RL. Based on everything, he recommended 5w30. I have 0w30 in there now that I'm going to run to 12,000 miles (over half way there) and get another UOA. I'm looking to see if you can tell a difference in the UOA between the RP oil filter and the Wix that's on there now. I'll also try to fix that leak before the next change.

I should probably make it clear Dave stated the leak would probably leak the same with all their oil weights.

The turbo oil return line is dry. The oil is coming from the aluminum side, the driver's side, of the turbo. I really cant tell where the oil is coming from, that whole side is wet.

Clean it up real well and check it again after maybe a week. You should be able to narrow it down a whole lot easier then.
