80w-90 or 75w-140 in Jeep front diff

The front diff in my 2003 Jeep liberty recommends a 75w-140 synthetic gear lube. It is a Dana 30 aluminum diff. However, the owners manual for a 2005 recommends 80w-90 (non-synthetic) for the front. They are the exact same differential, gear ratios, part numbers, etc.

The front is only under a load when in 4wd. 95% or more of the time the Jeep is in 2wd. I really only use 4wd when 4 wheeling or the fulltime option in the snow. However, front diff is always turning even in 2wd (no disconnect hubs), but there is not load on it unless in 4wd.

Any ideas on why there are two different recommendations for the same differential?

Would Mobil 1 75w-90 work just fine in the front? That is what I have in there right now. Wondering if I should change it out to a 75w-140 (synthetic) or a 80w-90.

I think your syn 75W90 will work fine in the front diff. Even when in 4WD there is only about 40% of the total torque transmitted through the front. I would recommend syn though, rather than the 80W90. Maybe run the lighter syn in the front, and the heavier (75W140) in the rear.

The descrepency in recommended oils is probably because of the CAFE standards the vehicle mfg has to meet. Factory fill in 05 was probably the lighter oil because it gives slightly better fuel mileage.

The only time I saw front gear oil to be the 75W-140 weight was in the Jeep Rubicon.This Jeep has the Dana 44 axles front and rear,with 4.10 gears,air lockers and out back a gear driven limited slip feature also.They are compact,strong axles and with all the stuff in them get hot.There is a metal tag on each axle that specifies "75W-140 SYN" so thats what I use on that Jeep.In all the other Jeeps I service I use 75W-90 up front and 75W-140 (allways synthetic,Pennzoil brand as of lately) out back reguardless if they tow or not.I put in a "little" Mopar limited slip additive out back if it's a Trac-Loc just for good measure.All my customers drive their Jeeps hard both on highway and off so thats why the use of the heavier oil,who cares about 2-3 miles per gallon when your axles' making noise after 2 years and you need a rebuild costing $7-800 bux.In your case use the 75W-90 up front and the 75W-140 out back both synthetic and a quality brand name.

Think the difference would be more like 2-3 miles per tankfull! instead of per gallon!! mileage loss is certainly minor compared to increased protection.
