AMSOIL recommends changing the [synth] oil every 7500 miles or 6 months.
Why 6 months? What happens to the oil after that? Does it decompose?

They probably say 6 months just so you'll be safe on your new car warranty. In reality, pretty much any oil, even the cheapest stuff, can go a full year without a problem (unless you drive only one mile per day, or something strange like that)

Actually I'm thinking of switching to synthetic (XL-7500). But I only drive like 650miles a month.

It the oil must be changed every 6 months it becomes too expensive.

No, it's not a matter that it must be changed at all. I'm confident you could go one year with this oil. Although why not use one of Amsoil's better oils like their ASL 5w30 (the one rated for 25,000 miles/one year), since it's only a little bit more. And since you'd only be doing one oil change per year, that little bit extra cost is no big deal anyhow, and it's a better built oil than the XL series.

XL series is not synthetic.

For about 50 cents a quart you can go the syntehtic Amsoil oils, XL is overpriced and its only advantage is the API doughnut

Some people only change once a year on here! But, the theory behind 7500Mi/6 month changes is that if you do a lot of short stop-and-go driving, you may only go 1K-2K in 6 months, but the oil is abused, so change it. If you go 7500 miles in 6 months, it's most likely long trips. The oil lasts longer in moderate driving, but it's still time to change at 7500 miles.

Or, I could be wrong.

I think most people agree that the filter needs changing at 6 months anyway. But if I have to get under the car to change the filter, I'm changing the oil as well. I think an oil that is only good for 6 months/7500 miles is ideal for me.

I can't speak for Amsoil, but the general idea is that acids would form in the crankcase, causing the deterioration of the oil. If one were to use the better oils with higher TBN numbers, I'm sure they would last better. For USD$20, you could do a Blackstone / Dyson analysis and tell for sure when the oil is corrupt
