I bought a 2002 6.8liter Excursion limited with 21,000 miles. I love this truck. Probably the best setup for my balloon business I could have found. It was a rental before I got it. I changed out the oil with M1 5-30 with a Fram Filter (my bad) as soon as I got it. Ran that oil for a little bit over 3K. Changed the oil & Filter after doing some reading here to M1 0-20 and a Pure One filter. Oil now has roughly 3500 miles on it. Ordered 3 bottles of auto-rx and expect them in the next couple days. Doing a long distance run From New Hampshire to Billings Montana the End of July pulling a 2500 lbs trailer. Looking for opinions and such:

Do I take a UOA sample before the auto rx or after?

I have a dipstick siphon for my boat would the any residue from that contaminate the sample signifigantly.

The instructions say 2oz per quart & 2oz for the filter. Capacity for the 6.8 is 6qt + 1qt for the filter. Will I be ok with just 1 bottle per cleansing or do I need to crack into the second?

Do I run Mobil 1 0-20, 5-30, 10-30 for the 5000 mile round trip to Mt?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

I would do a UOA before doing any additive/treatment. You might want to know if you have a problem before performing a treatment that may cause it's own problems.

I know AutoRX has it's fans here, but I never heard of it anywhere else. I'm also leary of putting anything into the crankcase other than the appropriate motor oil.

Auto-RX is simply an ester-based engine cleaner with no conventional additives, so there should not be any additive clash here.

I have used Amsoil and Mobil products in my '92 Burb's 350 and it now has 274,000 miles on it and the engine internals have never been touched; I use Mobil 1 SS 10W30 in winter.

I would defniately do a UOA before the trip, to establish a baseline for the engine.

Here in Northern Nevada were I live I am running Mobil 1 10w-30 in both my Excusion and F-250 SD. Both have the V10 motor. I run Mobil 1 5w-30 in the winter, because it can easily get into single digits and the 5w-30 is better suited for the colder temps. I use Motorcraft oil filters, and I would just use the maintenance dosage of the Auto-Rx. I have never used it, but I get the impression that it is a good product. I have about 63k miles on the Excursion, and about 12k on the SD P/U.

Did you "Excusion" users have to beef up the suspension system?

I have read that Excursions have this bad habit of leaving the factory with really mushy suspensions and the first order of business is to replace the shocks.

Not yet but it's on my list. The front end will bottom out on square bumps. You know the kind at the beginning and end of construction zones. I think I'm going with either rancho 9000 or bilstiens.

Do not put that stuff in your truck, it doesn't even have 30K on it, it s brand new. Just keep doing your regular oil changes with Mobil 1 and enjoy many miles of fun. Why are all these people insisting on put this crap in there cars, OIL belong in your engine, nothing else! Keep it changed regularly and that is it.

Not really oil related, but how do you like that 6.8 V10? Sounds really cool. I have driven our fire dept's 2001 F-550 mini-pumper with the 7.3 diesel and its sweet.

Dag, you said "Do not put that stuff in your truck, it doesn't even have 30K on it, it s brand new. Just keep doing your regular oil changes with Mobil 1 and enjoy many miles of fun. Why are all these people insisting on put this crap in there cars, OIL belong in your engine, nothing else! Keep it changed regularly and that is it. "

If that was true there would be 0 insolubles or oxidation, or nitration, or solids or soot in the 30,000 mile or less mileage engines I read analysis results on every day from all over the world.
I respect you opinion and You may poo poo Auto-Rx but the stuff is for real and unlike any other cleaner available. Solvency without harsh solvent after effect. Then theres the liquid filter capability I think even Frank Miller and his chemists have overlooked but thats another point.

I have to agree that auto-rx is not necessary! If you do regular oil changes no need for the auto-rx. Why put this beta additive in your vehicle?

MikeMc I LOVE

this truck and the 6.8. I love rolling down the road with the trailer on at 70+ and being able to jump on it to climb and hill or pass. This thing has serious B****. Passes everything but a gas station. Averaging 12 on highway with trailer 16 without and 11.5 around town.

Terry I've never done a UOA but I want to see how this 0-20 M1 held up after 3500 miles in this engine. I just bought 3 jugs of 5-30 M1 at walmart and a motorcraft filter. I'll use the MC filter for the auto-rx 500 miles then change it out to the 5-30 and a pure one filter.

I also ran a treatment of Valveline SynPower Complete Fuel System Treatment. Each bottle treats up to 20 gallons. I put 3 bottles in at 10 bucks ea. Seat of the pants seams to run better. Gas mileage also improved. I keep a speadsheet to track mileage so when I make a change I can see an subtle changes.

Have I become enough of an oil / engine geek yet?
Before this site I was happy going to the speed oil change shop at 3k. Now I go hunting different oils & filters. I think I need a good shrink.

Hmmmm.....I plan on putting a bottle of ARX as soon as I get back home in my 02 Z28. It only has 6200 miles. Why? I want to flush the engine of whatever little factory residue is left in it. Also, if it conditions the seals like it is claimed to do, that would be a good preventitive maintenance.
Those of you who are against it, do you put Techron in your fuel? Why? It's already in the fuel. Do you do 3-4000 mile oil changes? Why? You know oils can go way longer. Do you run synthetics? Why? Dino can do the same for regular changes.
Get the irony??

Is there significant sludge or oil consumption to warrant running auto-rx at only 21K miles? At most, I'd do one treatment, save the other two bottles for maintenance doses for the next 6-8 oil changes.

I would run Mobil 1 10W30 and use the Auto-RX for maintenance cleaning. You should have no significant cleaning issues at 21,000 miles.

How about the UOA stuff. Never did one before.
Should I take the sample before or after the ARX.

With 28K on the clock, the last 7 with M1 5-30 & M1 0-20 SS. I realize the internals should be clean I just want to make sure. Like I said I love this truck and I want it around for as long as possible.

to oil geekdom.

It has its advantages though. When we go to WalMart, the wife goes and does her thing and says, "I'll come get you in the oil dept".

Your wife sounds like my wife....the worst thing is that we go to Wal-Mart every 2-4 days and I always go to the car stuff (especially the oil section) to look at the same thing I looked at 2-4 days ago. Thanks a lot bobistheoilguy.com
