Who makes an over the counter 5W50 besides Castrol (Syntec aka Edge 5W50)? I emailed Pennzoil to ask them something about Platinum 5W50 and they told me they`ve discontinued it.
Not at your local auto part store, but a local Mobil oil distributor may be able to sell you M1 5w-50. They also make a racing 0w-50, but it's not API rated, if that matters.

I prefer 50 wts in my Z. Just runs smoother on hard/fast drives. Suprisingly enough,I got the best hwy mileage using Pennzoil dino 20W50. But I prefer to use synths. Which of these would you choose, and why:
Castrol Syntec 5W50
Royal Purple 20W50 (Synerlec or HPS)
Synpower 20W50
Mobil 1 15W50 (Mobil said WM will be carrying the 5 qt jugs soon)
These are the only otc 50 wts I can think of. If there`s any I missed, chime in :^)
I'd use the M1 15W-50, just because I've used it and liked the way it worked in my old BMW.
I've got some Syntec 5W-50 stashed and will use it in the BMW at some point.
Maybe it will then be on my list of favorite oils for the car?
Synpower 20W-50 would likely be okay.
If you try it and tell me it's good, I'll have to give it a shot in the old dear as well.
I'm becoming fond of Valvoline oils, although I've only really used them very much recently.
Mobil 1 is available as 5w50 through some online retailers.
Motul Sport 5w50 is another option, as is Millers Oils XFS 5w50, and Redline 5w50. The Redline 5w50 is fairly thick for its grade and probably more of a 60-weight.
And as others stated, there's M1 Racing 0w50. The ZDDP is crazy high and will probably cause some problems.
There are some 10w50 motorcycle oils, too.
Quaker State makes a 5w50 full synthetic. I've got some in my basement I picked up for $3.99 a quart. I've been using it a smidge at a time for top off's.
I use the syntec in my Harley for spring/fall. It doesn't stay in there for 5000 miles before it gets hot enough to put in the 15w-50. I wonder how it holds up in an air cooled motor.
I got two emails from Pennzoil. One says PP 5W50 has been discontinued, then another one giving me the "new" part number for what they just called "Pennzoil Synthetic". Now I`m confused. Do they or don`t they make a synth 5W50? Here`s both emails:
Dear Consumer,
The new Part number for our Pennzoil Synthetic 5W-50 is 5062780.
Please check with our distributors below:
Sir,
Pennzoil Platinum 5w50 has been discontinued. We are no longer able to purchase this product from Shell. Platinum is available in 5w30, 10w30, 0w20, 5w20 and Euro 5w40.
Thank you,
Customer Service
You're right it is thicker than necessary but the 5W-50 grade has a reputation for shearing a lot. Rotella T6 5W-40 is quite shear stable, probabily has a similar operational viscosity in service to a 5W-50 and is also thicker than necessary for the Z32 engine.

I at least run a 40 weight due to my driving style.
Why would it not be true? Both Pennzoil and Quaker State are Shell brands these days. Shell's been known to push the same product in different bottles in the past. For example, Shell Helix HX8 is the same as Pennzoil Ultra 5w-40.
