Why not use 10w-30? There have been numerous UOA results with 5w-30 Mobil 1 in 1.8Ts, some beyond 10,000 miles, and the results were superb!

I was not aware of this. I was only trying to stay with VW recommendations. He also lives in a hot climate.

I am a fan of M1 10W-30, but it is spec'd for my car.

I'm not sure I would want to go this thin in LA heat later with this one.

Why not use the newer M1 5W-40 though? I used to run M1 10W-30 with a touch of 15W-50 in my turbo Subaru, but now that Kragen is carrying M1 5W-40 I've switched to that. With all the talk about this oil on the board, I would think someone would mention it for the VAG 1.8T motor especially since it calls for a 5W-40. Is there a reason not to run M1 5W-40?

Thanks!

Absolutely not, but he says he is having trouble finding it. I've not seen it yet myself, but I'm sure I will soon.

I guess be patient.

til it gets on the shelves everywhere.

Ah, I see, the first post refers to not finding M1 5W-40 specifically. My fault.

In the SoCal area, Kragen Auto Parts do carry it. Ring ahead if you're concerned they'll not have it; the one on Grove Ave in Ontario, CA, had 8 bottles when I looked, and I bought the 5 I needed. Usually a Kragen is 15 minutes away from anywhere in Los Angeles. Ask if they've got the new Mobil1 synthetic with the yellow bottle cap if in doubt.

Autozone and Pep Boys do not have the stuff in my area (yet?).

With the huge and ever growing number of pickups, Hummers, Jeeps, SUVs, SAVs, luxo-sport UVs, LAVs, Abrams, or whatever else large and 5W-40ish driving around the greater LA basin, I'm sure Mobil will start selling this stuff like crazy, so wide availability won't be an issue too much longer.

I have a VW with the v6. I talked to VWOA about this and in my location recommended a 10w30 oil. But I think that the thing to look for if you want to be on the safe side is the VW spec 502 written on the back of the bottle. German Castrol 0w-30 has it and is what I'm currently using. The Mobil-1 0w-40 has the specs listed as well. I have used both and currently prefer the Castrol cause it just feels slicker and I know it would work great in your turbo 4.

The M1 5w40 is the 'Truck and SUV Formula'. This us apparently relabled Delvac 1. This should be fine for a VDub engine, but...

Them M1 0w40 carries the VW 502 and 505 certifications. In my mind, that is a bit of a tie breaker, pointing toward the 0w40.

Then again, there is Syntec 5w40, if you can find it (Hint: Look for Castrol branded quick oil change places).

Does anyone know if it is OK to use Mobil 1 synthetic 10W30 instead of the VW manufacturer spec of 5W40? I can't find 5W40 anywhere.

No, I would not use Mobil 1 10W-30.

Especially, because of your climate.

Keep searching.

If you must use a Mobil 1 product, I know you can find 0W-40 at Autozone. This would be preferrable to the 10W-30.

Ask at you local Autozone or other parts store and I'm sure they can order what you need and get it quickly.

Your local Wal-Mart should have Rotella-T 5w-40.
