i have a ford mustang with the 4.6 and run nothing but dino 5w20,change oil every 4000 miles with a motorcraft filter.i normally use casrtol with stp 4cyl treatment, but i was thinking of trying mobil 5000.anyone here use it and is it good as castrol?

If you go to the Used Oil Analysis section and do a search, you will get some helpful information. For a 4,000 mile oil change, Mobil 5000 should do a fine job.

Mobil 5000 or castrol would work just fine. Honestly, i'd just stick with castrol and ditch the stp 4cyl treatment stuff.

If you're going to change every 4000k, lose the assembly lube and go with ANY 5w20 dino. If you want to join the crazy ranks here, go with M1/PP/other syn and run 7500k or longer.

7500 miles seems a bit long.I run my car really hard, put about 100 miles a day on it and i also live in a dust bowl

I'm not a big advocate of UOA's simply due to the cost, but you could run syn to 5k with your driving style and then test it to see how it's doing. Do the 4.6's have chains on those cams?

Actually, then using a synthetic might be ideal for you. How often do you change your oil?

I've also heard about the reputation of Motorcraft Syn Blend, and I might consider it in the future. That's somewhat surprising to me, since factory recommendations are often due to contractural agreements (read: money deals) which while not necessarily bad, might not be the best for the consumer.

In my case, I also have a Mustang GT with 4.6L engine. I'm trying Redline 5W-20, and will do a UOA at 30,000 miles (before warranty is up) just for fun. While I don't mind paying the extra for Redline if I'm gaining an advantage, I'll go to something like Motorcraft if it does as good a job. However, while Motorcrat may well be a fine oil, it's hard for me to believe that it's as good as the vaunted Redline...

performs very well in Ford products.

Ditto!

I would much rather run the MC 5w20 over the mobil. Or better yet, run both and do UOA's on them. Take some time to look at the MC 5w20 UOA's and you'll see why so many people use it.

For a 5w20 application, I don't think there is a better oil for the money than Motorcraft in the 5 qt. jug at Walmart. It's still under $10 last time I looked.

i have a 06 mustang gt as well and am torn between staying with the motorcraft or going to mobil 1 syn. My car only runs on the weekends and has easy highway miles. hmmm.
It just feels weird putting in the factory recomendation haha.

Well for the original poster:

Any car that specs 5W20, I would not put any additive in there, especailly if it's a thick one. Not sure about STP, never used it. But you don't wanna thicken it, right? That kind of defeats the purpose of using a 5W20.

And if that additive is more simliar to MMO, then it would thin the oil. Either way, seems like not a ggod idea.

If your engine is tight enough to run 5W20, then it is not in the need of additives.

Now pouring that in your oil right before an oil change, just to help clean/flush, that would be ok, IMHO, if you want to do that.

IMHO, additives are only good if you have a worn engine and don't want to put money into rebuilding it right away, or using MMO or seafoam as a mild engine flush, like when my oil gets nasty from me running rich or from burning oil, I want a little bit of something to help rinse it out when I drain the oil.

But a good, tight engine under normal or even somewhat severe service has no need for anything but quality oil.

Because neither of your engines are turbocharged or supercharged (I assume?), I would go with Chevron 5W20 and a good filter every 3-4 months. Or synthetic every 5-6 months.

If one car is mostly just a weekend car, i would just change it twice a year with dino, assuming that you run it good every once and a while, not just 1/2 or something, but at least 10 mile trip.

Yep Chevron Supreme Dino 5W20 for $1.09/quart (coupon), and either the walmart supertech oil filter, puralator, or wix.

Any reason why you have felt compelled to use the STP stuff?
