I was researching SynPower that I have in now in a 20W50 application and a 5W20 one.

I believe the 20W50 was likely all PAO based on comments and MSDS.

I see the 5W20 is 10% PAO based on MSDS. Is this true ?

I thought all Synpower was GrpIII except the 20W50.

(Now I think the 5W40 is all PAO based on it's European spec's.)

Might contain some PAO. I would hardly call my grill test conclusive, but I was surprised at how volatile Synpower was compared to Amsoil and PP. I'm sure in daily drivers in moderate drain intervals, the oil should work really well.

Buster, remember that just because something is combustible doesn't make it bad. Many volatile compounds are simply the best cleaners. I have no problems with synpower, and no oil loss during normal 5000mi OCIs.

Buster,

Very interesting test/observation on SynPower 5W20.

Fortunately my 5W20 app is benign so Novak and the like is inconsequential.

BUT I also have a _W50 app where good Novak is needed.

I tenatively conclude (from your experiment) a small amount of PAO will not help Novak very much. Which makes sense.

Another tentative conclusion is the PP (i assume it was 5W20) basestock, Shell XHVI?, was better in volitility then the SnyPower base.

The SynPower in a modern 3L non-turbo engine with 5K OCI is more than fine at the right price.
