The 3.1 and 3.4 are notorious for this. They are also known for intake gasket leak. If it is comeing from the bottom end thicker oil will reduce this some what. GM's offical policy on this is that the knock is not a durability issue.

It's not the main or the rod bearings that are a problem with these engines. It's piston slap, and excessive wristpin to piston clearance. The 3.4 in my Olds van has had both since day one and it still runs like a top with 140,000+ miles on it, so durability really doesn't seem to be an issue. With the exception of the intake gasket (replaced at 115,000), this engine has been bullet proof. It still uses no oil between changes and I get 28-30 mpg on the highway.

Yes Sir!! My 02 Z28 started slapping at about 1k miles. Now it sounds like a Jeep Cherokee or a Cummins.

I have a '00 Z71 with the "infamous" GM tick. However, it does not tick when engine is warm.
Not sure we have the same problem, but you may want to try a fuel injection system flush using BG advanced formula. This cleans the air intake system and "Combustion Chambers" where GM says the tick originates. I had mine done at the dealer for $89. You could probably have it done or do it yourself for less. The "tick" went away, but returned after about 2-3K miles.

Bottom line, if your engine is performing well otherwise, don't worry about it. I have a friend who has 125K on his "ticker" and it still runs great, no oil usage, good UOAs. It is not an oil viscosity issue. I recommend you use oil recommended in your owner's manual. Good Luck!
