I bought a new Concorde in June. I sent Chrysler an e-mail asking about using 5W20 in it.They told me not to because the engine would get lower gas mileage if I used it instead of the recomended 5W30. I find it hard to believe the 2.7L motor in the 2005 models is any different than the 2004 model year.

Well the article is a little incorrect on a few things. It says "Red line" vehicles use Honda V6's, this isn't really very accurate. The Vue uses a Honda V6 in Red line and none redline form, and the Ion Red line uses a GM engine. It's also missing alot of Chrysler engines, but I think we can assume the 3.5 and 3.2(if they still make it) will use the same oil as the 2.7 and the 3.8 will use the same oil as the 3.3.

Nope. The 3.5 24V SOHC (the 3.2 is no longer made) is spec'd as before: 10w30. The 2.7 24V DOHC used to be spec'd for 5w30 and it is now spec'd for 5w20.

The Mobil 1 that came in the Viper V10 has always been 10w30, so I'm a bit surprised that this article is saying that 0w40 is what's being used now.

I am too. The Viper has had 10w-30. Is the HP that much higher? I'm going to use a thick 30wt or 40wt in the Hemi.

G-Man do you know if the 2.7L has actually changed specs (bearing clearances, etc) in order to use 5W20 or did they simply wave a wand over it and thereby duly certifying it for 5W20? I e-mailed Chrysler for a response since the last time they told me it would decrease gas mileage but I'm not holding my breath for anything more than a canned response. Thanks

No changes that I know of. Just as there were no changes as far as clearance from when the new Hemi was introduced in the Dodge pickups and called for 10w30, but in the new 300C it too is spec'd for 5w20.

I've been using 5w20 in the 3.5 in my 300M for most of this year with no problems. Indeed, as I posted on here, the 5w20 returned the best UOA I've ever gotten from this engine.

I've been keeping tabs on your use of the 5W-20 in that engine which calls for a 10W-30, and the results are fascinating. What is your opinion, and any others, of just trying a run of it on most any modern engine that calls for a 5W-30, let alone 10W-30? Also, what have been the pros and cons of your experience using the 5W-20? Possibly, I'd like to try it in the 97 Stratus 2.5L-V6. Or you think a Cadillac Northstar would take well to it?

I don't think a Northstar would be a good candidate simply because those engines have a history of oil consumption issues even with the oil they are spec'd for.

Anyone wanting to do what I am doing, I'd suggest they take the same route: Don't run the oil for more than 3000 miles the first time out and do a UOA to see how well the 5w20 does in your engine. If the numbers come back poor, go back to using what the manual calls for.

FWIW the Northstar and 3800s were the last holdouts for 10w30 at GM, I'd stick with that unless your talking synthetic then 5w30 would probably be fine.

Interesting about the Chrysler V6s. I assumed they were the same, but since you pointed it out I noticed the 2.7 has a higher compression ratio and DOHCs.

The compression ratio on my 3.5 is 10:1. Is it higher than that on the 2.7?

I have a 2k Cirrus with the 2.5 v6 and run 0w40 with great results. The engine is quiet and it does not burn any oil in 6k-8k mile OC. For the winter I put in 0w30 m1 and it did burn over 1/2 quart in 6k miles. I am going back to 0w40 and sticking with it.
