getting ready to change filter and do a shift kit which fluid should i use??I bought the maxlife already but these transmissions are problematic and i want to avoid any problems i am leaning towards the DEX ??

I wouldn't use anything that didn't state it was specifically for your vehicle.

Having the trans model number is nice, but you'd get better advice if you shared what car it was going into and the mileage on the trans.

Its a 98 Regal GS with a supercharged 3800 thats why it has the HD version. The trans has 127,000 the fluid is very clean says it was serviced once previously. It calls for DEXIII

Maxlife. I wouldn't run Dex-VI in your 4T65. I didn't have positive experiences with Dex-VI in my old Buick's 4T65. Maxlife shifted better and more consistently for longer.

Serviced once in 127,000 miles ?! Even if the vehicle has been babied the ATF has taken a beating and the trans as well. I wouldn't put a shift kit in it at this point. With that kind of mileage and lack of maintenance you're asking for trouble.

Changing the filter is a good idea. I'd use Dexron VI and limit the fluid change to whatever comes out when you drop the pan. Changing all the fluid can create problems with higher mileage transmissions.

Here's some good info to consider regarding ATF.

The shift kits for the 98-03 4T65's generally don't do anything except prevent problems. Thus, they are a nice addition when doing a pan drop.

And, lots of folks on here have used Maxlife in this transmission with only positive things to say. More folks, including myself, have tried Dex-VI in the same transmission and not liked the result.

Just my $0.02.

Keith, i cant control what the previous owner did i am lucky they serviced it at that mileage. Most do not at all, i have been reading about the shift kits for awhile. Some put in the kits with much higher milaege than that and had great results.Anyone know the biggest shims i can use i am thinking about a 1 inch on the bottom and a 3/4 inch on top?? Looks like i will use the maxlife unless someone can convince me different.THANKS for the input so far guys!

Sciphi and Jsnyder, thanks for the info.

I guess the only thing you have to decide on is an ATF. Do what you're comfortable with and hope for the best.
