4 ball test?

On the Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forum, in the Lube section, it states that Havoline did not fare too well in the 4 ball test. What does that mean? I use Havoline on a regular basis (have for years) and it seems to be pretty highly regarded here. What's this 4-ball thing all about and any truth to it? The 4-ball wear test does not represent what happens inside an engine. It does have some merit for grease and gear oils, but is not the best test...other tests have more consistent results. Amsoil uses this test because they put a big slug of zinc phosphate antiwear agent in their oil to help give the oil the long life. Thus, Amsoil oils can not meet API and ILSAC specs due to the high phosphate level. Ken
