How did that car ever make it to 100k? Or did he only recently start to neglect the maintenance?

Edit: of course, I admit that I once drove a 1982 Cutlass for about 4k miles after all of the oil leaked out, and it continued to run just fine for at least another 60k after I replaced a leaky gasket...
