Hey!

Just wanted to share my recent oil analysis

Car is a 2023 wrx, modded and tuned at 1k miles and swapped to E40 at about 8k miles.

First oil change @1k miles with Valvoline EP 5W30 and from 11.5k switched over to restore and protect 5w30. I was running 3.5k oil intervals but with the slight shearing I've lowered it to 3k.

Let me know what you think

Not what we think, what we know: when you use Blackstone for analysis you have no idea if it’s dilution or shear. You can guess, but that’s it. If you’re worried about fuel content you need to use a lab that tests fuel using gas chromatography.

And edy has good advice; I got by with a Euro 5w30 on E30, but with no viscosity index improvers.

The flashpoint on these UOAs is high enough to rule out excessive fuel dilution. Most of the viscosity loss is likely from shear thinning.

Fuel dilution and shear-thinning tend to both stop getting worse within 1,000 miles of an oil change. Low viscosity is no reason to change the oil earlier. It will be about the same at 6,000 miles. If you feel that the oil is too thin, the solution is to go up a grade or use a more shear stable oil.

You're putting miles on quickly, which should be easy on the oil, and TBN was still really healthy at 3k miles. I'd extend the OCI, especially since you're doing UOAs.

Thanks for posting this. I'm always excited to soak up more reports on Restore and Protect.

I agree with twX. Way back when, I did some oil analysis after just 300 miles on another oil, and it had already sheared. That does seem to happen early on. I don't think you need to do oil changes more often. 3000 seems awfully quick. I'm not sure I'd feel I have to use Restore and Protect in a new car, but I get the idea of keeping it super clean.

I am always tempted to get a WRX. I hope you're enjoying it!

I think the R & P is probably better for cars that arent as tuned or powerful. I have a hunch that Amsoil, High Performance Lubricants, Redline or Royal Rurple HPS might be in your future for a more robust sturdy lubricant. Nice car!!

Good to know! Car is an absolute blast.

I moved up to 5w30 (recommended is 0w20 for N.A) since all other markets use it, and I'm in hot s. FL.

Is it recommended I move up to 5w40? I mostly do highway driving and some occasional spirited driving

Nice! I'm in a 22 wrx with Valvoline R&P 5w30. Going to do a UOA soon as I'm about to hit 3k miles on this OCI. I'm also probably going to order Amsoil SS 5w30 to run next

Since the car calls for 0w-20 as the default oil, this seems like even less of a worry for you IMHO. You're still easily a 0w-20 on those reports, and it's not going to keep dropping by doing another couple thousand miles.

The R&P 5W-30 has a high HTHS for the grade, at 3.24 cP, quite a bit higher than the 2.6-2.7 cP of a typical 0W-20. I'd say it's plenty thick enough for non-track use even in a hot climate.

Monitor your oil temperature gauge to see how high it gets in spirited driving. If it stays under 250°F, I wouldn't consider going thicker.

One downside of the euro oils is that they don't tend to be as good at LSPI prevention compared to API SP oils. LSPI has destroyed a lot of FA20DIT engines. Not sure if the FA24DIT fares any better. IMO, higher calcium oils aren't worth the risk.

I guess this depends if we think that these results are 100% accurate?

At the very least, I would move up to a higher HTHS Euro oil which is what is allowed in the stock JDM FA24 WRX. You can go with an ACEA C3 xW-30 which gives you a more robust viscosity without the higher metallic additives.

Looks good I'd stay with the 5w-30.

I've been looking at Mobil 1 ESP 5W30 which is ACEA C3and a lot of other nice specs for my 22 wrx
