Owners manual says 5w30
I found some Some Chevron supreme semi synthetic 5w30. After rebates it will be 1.51/qt it takes 7.75 qts
If you figure 8 qts $12.08
I got 10 filters for 17.99 total from rockauto for the explorer a few years back its the same one! Champion COS10575 iir.
Less than 15 bucks for an oil change
My last truck was a 2008 and had 42,000 miles. I figure I will change the oil once a year or 4000 miles which ever comes first.
I do tow but its not a super heavy trailer 4000lbs fully loaded. Last year with the old truck we did drive 2700 miles in 2 weeks. 2200 miles was towing. Yellowstone was our destination and it was absolutely incredible. I still feel the chevron will be up to the task.

Sounds like you don't drive it that much. I would probably change the oil more frequently, but that's me.

Others will chime in and mention to get Blackstone UOA etc. For an oil change cost that cheap I'd probably max out at 3k miles for that type of use.

That oil will be as good as any other oil you can buy using those oil change intervals.

-It is current production “SP” oil.

-As for annual mileage the last 11 years
Averaged around 2200 miles per year
The first 2 I drove about 18000 total.

Nothing wrong with Chevron they make excellent oils especially for the money. I mostly use their Delo instead of Rotella but wouldn't have a problem using their automotive oil in my vehicles.
