Got a new Prius Prime plugin and have put about 2k on it now-amazingly efficient vehicle.I have been getting around 30 miles on ev after plugging in -sometimes close to 40mi -before engine starts-after that mpg average will stabalize out at around 80mpg if for example my trip is about 150-200 miles.Did a few 50 mile runs without plugging in first so starting with ev portion of battery already depleted and still got 75mpg.You can put it into force chg mode and it will fill/chg ev portion of battery back up as you drive (takes around 50mi or so) then you can go back into full ev mode-electric only for another 30mi. Mileage while in force chg mode maybe 60mpg or so.Car is very comfortable and handles great, super-quiet most of the time-acceleration decent except right after initial ev battery portion depletion and motor starting-then it is a little sluggish as motor drives car and starts charging battery together-this sluggishness seems to only last a coupla miles and then car is back to running on combo of ev and hv modes ie; light loads it stays in ev mode, or heavy loads motor working and some motor noise but not too loud.In northeast you can get approx $5k off msrp (combo from toyota, state rebate &discount)-and if you can use it a fed tax credit of $4500- so almost $10k total off-so about $25k otd price with all taxes etc for mid level with softex leather.

Sounds like they redesigned their system to be more like the Chevy Volt. The first Prius did not operate that way and were always in "parallel hybrid" mode. This is called series hybrid. Except the Volt almost never drove the wheels, just the generator, so there was no sluggishness at all, ever.

Congrats on the new car , having EV mode is very addictive.

If the Prime would have come out at its current price 7 years ago I might not have the Volt.

I will likely have my Volt through rust out so probably no new car for Me for a long while but it’s fun to watch the progress from my 1981 Comutacar to the original 1999 Insight through the current offerings

have fun, these cars are like an economy video game

Yes, editing my own post: The Volt GAS ENGINE almost never drove the wheels.....
