I sent an oil sample to Blackstone and it came back with really high iron and copper numbers. Including the factory fill the last oil change was the 4th oil fill in the engine. My truck has the infamous lifter rattle on startup.

That is really, really bad start up noise. I’d take it back to Chrysler. I’ve heard it a couple of times on trucks that had sat for a long time between starts, but if this is driven regularly it should not sound like that IMO.

Copper is a little high but I wouldn't be worried yet. I attached the last sample on my 2016. Also my truck sounded just like that, same short duration as well and it was broken exhaust manifold bolts. Would have never believed it since it only lasted a few seconds at most, but no noise since I had them replaced under warranty. Mine were broken at 35k miles.

Did yours do it every time or just once in awhile?

I have multiple times. They won't fix it.

Initially it was just every once in a while, it gradually got more frequent then once it finally did it for a solid 10 seconds which got me to investigate. Its normally the bolt closest to the firewall on either side that breaks. Dealer told me my back bolt was broken on both sides. On the passenger side I could reach in there and feel that the heat shield was loose on the back bolt since it was broken.

Try a 5W30 like Mobil 1 or Castrol and a NAPA Gold oil filter. If that doesn’t cure it, find another dealership.

That's definitely internal. Something is either loose inside the engine or somethings

I was thinking that too, I slightly thicker oil (a W-30). Maybe Magnatec?

I don't know if any oil viscosity will resolve that. Not even Burla's (bitog member) Red Line or high Moly recommendations.I'd find a new dealership or RAM independent specialist.

OP, if you're set on trying an oil "remedy", look up Burla's posts using the search feature or try the new Valvoline Extended Protection. It's a very high Moly oil. I have my serious doubts though. Best of luck.

My thought is if there is actually a better oil, do you really want it to make the issue last to a point it will develop a serious problem outside of warranty and not be covered?

The thing is, if this were an engine with 200,000 miles I’d say...ok, you’ve got a lifter that is worn/leaking down/dirty/etc, but the engine only has 12.5k miles??? That thing should sound like a sewing machine. Seriously.

I mean, maybe a little bit of lifter noise - very slight lasting a second - MIGHT be ok on that engine, but nothing like the duration and loudness of the tapping your engine is doing. No way.

Yep, many people on the various RAM forums have tried the Red Line 5W30. It’s helped with some owners. That’s the reason I said to go with a 5W30 oil and a WIX/NAPA Gold oil filter.
It’s high time to find another RAM dealer to look at your truck.

I got a phone call and didn't realize I hadn't finished my post before I hit "post reply".

That's definitely internal. Something is either loose inside the engine or something's not getting properly lubricated. At least that's what it sounds like to me. When it quietens up is when it sounds like it's finally oiled.

Did Burla post an analysis of that oil? I'd be very interested to see the moly levels. I tried searching and couldn't find anything. Is the search feature here still goofy?

@Whitestar
Can you determine if it’s coming from the top end or bottom end?
A good way to check is with a 3’ piece of heater hose, fuel line or any other type of hose that you have available.
Take the hose and put one end up to your ear and use the other end to listen to your valve covers on both sides.
Same process underneath. One end to your ear and the other to the oil pan. This is a poor mans stethoscope.
You can take a video of it once you get it narrowed down.

Splash lubrication? The Hemi isn’t a lawnmower engine.
VVT: Variable Valve Timing?
MDS: Cylinder deactivation?
Improperly heat treaded parts? Camshafts and lifters.
Oil starvation in the upper engine?
