There may be a basis for suggesting so, but VW 50400 was intro in late 2005 in conjunction with Euro IV 50 ppm sulphur fuels though .
10 ppm Euro 5 fuel was intro several years later than Euro 4.

Thanks guys. You've been really helpful. At least I found Castrol Edge 0w40 and 5w40, as well as Mobil 1 0w40, all VW 502 00 approved. I read in one of the BITOG forums that Pennzoil Platinum Euro L is not VW approved (it used to be VW 504 00 approved). Oh well, but I can find Pennzoil Euro AV 5w30 which is VW 502 00 approved, as well as Platinum Euro 5w40. As for VW 504 00 oils, they're hard to find in my area, but I can still order online. Thanks again.

FWIW, I've owned several petrol VW group cars over the past 8 years or so and the UK manuals all expressly state that 502 is suitable for the 'fixed' service interval (10,000 miles) and 504 for the variable (read longer) interval. I change mine regularly enough to use 502 but use 504 because it's a really good and well defined spec and that's what I want in my hot turbocharged engine.

My Wife had a Polo that allowed for 502 or 504.

502 allowed 10k/1 year intervals and the 504 allowed upto 2 years or 18,000miles. The OLM could be changed by the dealer depending which service regime you wanted to use.

No matter which oil you pick, any branded oil approved to 502 or 504 will see you well!

Especially for the turbocharged engines, they run hot and beat on their oil and that's where the benefits of 504 really show.

502 is junkie oil.

Edge 5w-40 meets MB 229.3, an old similar spec to VW 502, but doesn't meet MB 229.5, you need a real manly oil for that one.

FORGET VW 502, it's an obsolete and weak spec. Look for MB 229.5 in a 0w-40 and you are done, except of you want a reduced SAPS oil, then VW 504 or PZ Euro L 5w-30 w/MB 229.51 for $22/jug. I just drained it out from my EA888 and it was black as pitch after 1yr /2500mi....better base oil.
