I thought this was interesting. Mercedes recommends many, many different viscosities for the GLC.

VISCOSITIES:
All TEMPS....0W-30, 0W-40
Above -13 F .5W-30, 5W-40, 5W-50
Above -4 F .10W-30, 10W-40, 10W-50, 10W-60
Above 5 F .15W-30, 15W-40, 15W-50
Above 23 F .20W-40, 20W-50

In contrast, Nissan only recommends 0W-20 in my '21 Titan.

they want you to use a 229.51 or 61 oil. Pennzoil Platinum Euro L 5W30 is probably the easiest to find.

the viscosity chart 224.1 is a carryover from the 90s.

Why .51 or .61? Does it have a particulate filter, or a diesel engine? Or otherwise require Low SAPs?

2018 MB gas engines are typically 229.5 or .6 (the fuel saving, extended drain stuff). If it's the gas V6, the Pennzoil GTL 5W-40 should work great in Nevada year 'round.

And beyond that, grades are largely irrelevant in light of the approval. Comparing what Nissan recommends to what Mercedes requires for an approval isn't meaningful.

you’re right they switched to 51 in 2020.

still, if you’re afraid of the ivd boogeyman a .51 oil is better long term

ivd. Is that like LSPI? Oh, Intake valve deposits. I can see your point. Is that why .51 & .61 were spec'd in 2020? I just assumed that spec was for particulate reduction.

Funny you mention that. I have one more oil change with Mobil1 then it goes to this:

I just thought it interesting in terms of recommended viscosities, Nissan only recommended 0W-20 while Mercedes included nearly everything.

It's the 2.0 Turbo. It has lived on 0W-40 or 5W-40 up till now. I will try a 5W-30 pretty soon (see above) as it does a lot of highway time and I might be able to grab an extra 1/100th of a mpg. :giggle:

Yeah, mines the 2.0T as well. You don't say what mileage numbers you are currently getting, but mine will consistently hit 39-40 peaks, with about a 36 average. I doubt that you will ever hit those numbers with an SUV.
I run Ravenol FDS 5W-30 right now.

25.8mpg average over the last 10k miles. Might be able to stretch 30-31mpg on a long highway run.
