2016.5 Mazda CX-5, AMSOIL 0W-20 Signature, 13,382/60,382 Miles with TBN Analysis

Hi All,

Here is my first oil analysis ever with extended life.

7/25/20 (OLD) Setup:
Oil Used:
AMSOIL Signature 0W-20
Filter Used: AMSOIL EA15K12-EA

7/25/20 (NEW) Setup:
Oil Used:
AMSOIL Signature 0W-20
Filter Used: Mobil 1 M1-108A Extended Performance Oil Filter

Commentary from AMSOIL Rep:
You made a good call by sampling after a long drive. That's a good way to get rid of raw fuel from start-up and this sample is indeed free of any measurable fuel. You'll find metals are in great shape compared to averages for the engine type. Iron is slightly elevated but that's what you can expect from normal accumulation since this oil run was longer than our 6,900-mile average. The viscosity is slightly high, so the oil thickened a little above grade but that didn't hurt anything. The 2.6 TBN shows active additive to spare since 1.0 or less is low. Try 15,000 miles.

I think that might be a type for the oil makeup.

I'd say it's an OK report. Could be better, but not bad at all. I've seen a lot of 2.5L Skyactiv UOA's and the viscosity usually stays spot on or drops a tad up to 12k miles. I'm not sure why it's now a 30 grade. I think 10k is a nice sweet spot for this engine/oil combo.

What does 30 grade mean? I will try to do 18-19k for my next oil change and report back but I drive a lot so I don't want to keep getting under my car haha
 
It means that over your 13382 mile OCI, the oil thickened(slightly) into the next grade up, into a 30(0W30 or 5W30) weight instead of holding at a 20 weight(0W20). But just slightly! This oil may have started out at the high end of a 0W20 in its virgin state.
 
High iron why would they recommend 15k ?
My thinking get the oil out earlier to keep the iron count down.
My thoughts aswell.... I understand its low if you look at from the perspective of 1.28ppm/1k mi... But that's not how I would decipher it as we are looking at the end number.
I possibly should not even comment as I am not well experienced with extended OCI's, or am I interested in them for my own vehicles. Having said that the Silicon would have me checking under the hood... It still compares high to the averages, apparently even through an extended OCI. I would clean out my air intake, air box (normal OCI maintenance anyway) and make sure everything is tight in that area. If you're using a K/N or similar filter, I would toss it in favor of a normal dry filter. Many years back I had silicon plaguing my JEEP UOA's (far far worse than this) and going to an AMSOIL dry gauze air filter cleared it up instantly. I have not wasted money on a K/N since.... In then end I still think this is a good UOA.

Good point above as trying another oil for comparison, like M1 0W20 or something.
 
Iron is bit high, and why it thickened?
I would as a control try something else like Mobil1, Pennzoil or Castrol just to see how it behaves.

I already put in 5 qts of AMSOIL Signature but afterwards, I'll give Mobil 1 a try and see how it goes. Just curious, why would a high iron content be bad? I honestly have no idea why it would thicken.

I will try it one last time with the Mobil 1 filter and see if the results are consistent. If it is, then I will not go past 10k anymore.

It shows bit more wear. Also it could be oxidation when it comes to thickening. Next time do TAN too so you can see what is acidity.

Looking at the numbers in isolation of distance traveled does not make any sense to me. A poorly wearing engine will still look good at 1000 miles and a great wearing engine will look bad after 30k miles. If you consider ppm/1000 miles it gives you the rate of wear and it's a much better way to look at it.

I believe that the oil thickened due to soot, not oxidation. It's a GDI engine after all. Maybe I'm wrong.
