Ford lists "Motorcraft Transfer Case Fluid" for the transfer case, not ATF or gear oil. The Amsoil website lists the same ATF as their transmission takes.

Its only 2 QT so I can buy it at the dealer. But I would prefer to run an Amsoil synthetic fluid if possible.

Anyone know about Motorcraft Transfer Case Fluid?

Motorcraft transfer case fluid is basically the old Dex/Merc that was used in part time transfer cases for decades.

Which transmission fuid are they referring to?

Motorcraft X-12:

Transfer Case Fluid is recommended by Ford Motor Company for use in transfer cases driving front axles on Ford, Lincoln and Mercury AWD/4X4 vehicles. For use in transfer cases where MERCON® ATF was previously recommended. Do not use in AWD vehicles equipped with a transaxle

Motorcraft® Transfer Case Fluid is manufactured with high-viscosity index, premium-quality, hydroprocessed base oils and specially designed performance additives to provide increased protection against deposit, rust, corrosion, and wear and maintains proper viscosity at extreme temperatures

Do not use in automatic transmissions, manual transmissions, power take off units (PTU) or fluid couplers

For use in all conventional transfer cases and pre-2012 MY Torque on Demand transfer cases

Do not use in transfer cases where MERCON® LV ATF is recommended

Is Ford saying all Mercon and XL-12 cases are backspeced to LV? I think I'll continue using cheap Dex/Merc instead of Mercon LV.

Motorcraft® MERCON® LV is a premium-quality automatic transmission fluid recommended by Ford Motor Company for use in Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles that require MERCON® LV type fluid. This product also provides excellent performance in electronically controlled automatic transmissions. Check Owner Guide and transmission fluid charts for application

Motorcraft® MERCON® LV is manufactured with high-viscosity index, premium-quality, hydroprocessed base oils and specially designed performance additives, which provide excellent shifting characteristics at high and low ambient temperatures and guards against transmission shudder. This fluid has excellent thermal, oxidation and shear stability and good low temperature fluidity. It provides wear protection and inhibits the formation of gum, sludge, lacquer and foam. It also prevents against rust and corrosion. It is dyed red for ease of leak detection

For use in all transfer cases

For use in power steering systems built after 2012

Do not use in applications where MERCON® ULV, MERCON® V, MERCON® SP (exceptTorqShift®), Continuously Variable Chain Type Transmission Fluid, Motorcraft® Premium Automatic Transmission Fluid, FNR5 Automatic Transmission Fluid or Type F Automatic Transmission Fluid is recommended, or in power take-off units

Refer to the Motorcraft® MERCON® LV product data sheet at the link below for additional information. For SDS information call 1-800-448-2063

"For use in all transfer cases"

Should be fine in my NP205.

If you can find Kendall VersaTrans LV, it would be a great alternative. My indy actually used it in place of Mercon SP & LV in my Ford work van transmissions, and they worked well on it.
