This was the first use of HPL in this vehicle. Oil was in service for 18 months, mix of city and highway.

Looks good. (y) Fuel probably kept that viscosity down to 9.0. TBN is strong and wear is low. I like the Mazda 2.0 better than 2.5L.

Excellent results. Did you sample cold like they mentioned regarding the reason for water being present?

Curious why you like the 2.0 over the 2.5, are they more long-lived? Easier on the oil? I’ve never read up on the differences—I assumed the displacement difference was all stroke; if so, more side loads on the pistons? Any info you can share would be cool. Thanks!
@The Critic, I’m considering HPL oils for my wife’s 2016 CX-5 with the 2.5. Is there a special blend you went with or did you call them and ask what they recommended? Curious how to purchase HPL and how it all works.
Rookie question, how do they differ from Amsoil? I have a buddy who has an account and he thought I should run the Amsoil Signature Series but I keep hearing how good HPL is here.

This was their entry-level, Passenger Car 5W20 oil. Not a special blend for me.

HPL and Amsoil are both boutique brands. I would say that Amsoil's product line and formulation strategy seems to track closer to current market and OEM trends, while HPL takes a more traditional formulation approach. Both brands are intended for users who want more out of their oils than what the OTC offerings can theoretically offer, but they each use different approaches.

Unless u have a specific use case( ie extended OCI 10k+, track day, towing a trailer, etc ), I don’t think the average daily driver can find a statistical wear metal difference among Amsoil, HPL and OTC UOAs. Over the past 10 yrs, I have completed 25+ 2014 Venza 2GR-FE UOA every 5k and would be hard pressed to correctly associate an oil brand (Idemistu ZPro, HPL, PU, PUP, TGMO, Shell truck/gas) to the UOA. With prior BITOG knowledge, HPL stands out in the Mo and B additive section but the wear metal difference is zero.

Buying HPL and doing an UOA reinforces the male ‘confirmation bias’ psyche with the hope for further reduction of varnish and carbon debris. At our family sibling dinner gatherings, I always thump my chest (aka do a Tarzan Call) and tell my brother that I am smarter than the average male 🐻. At least with automotive oil purchases and used oil analysis.

Lol

Certainly not using random UOA as a tool.
