My dad has about 225k on a Chevy impala. He had been going 5k on Dexos

The manual seems to indicate 3k miles changes, although it wasn’t super
Clear and said to follow oil life
Monitor.

With a Dexos synthetic oil is 5k a good interval? Seems maybe a little early to change out?

How long till the OLM goes off?
I thought GM was 1 year or OLM going off?

Unless he is doing a lot of stop and go driving/short trips, 5,000 miles should be fine, if not longer.
Since he has been doing 5,000 mile intervals for 225,000 miles, I think it is safe for him.

Does it use any oil over that interval? 5k seems fine to me. The short interval is prob for severe use.

I believe the 3,000 mi OCI is in case of an accidentally reset OLM. Otherwise you just follow the OLM as long as it has a Dexos Rated (or equivalent) oil.

The question is whether your dad will be comfortable going 10,000 mi if the OLM goes that long.

If it ain't broke , don't fix it . Your Dad is happy with 5,000 miles . I would be too .

Who does the car belong to and who paid for it ?
