So on spring startup the raw water pump seems to be leaking between the inner and outer section where there should be a rubber O-ring .

I have a new impeller and O-ring in a box.

My question is does the pump ever wear to a point that you need a new pump vs a new impeller and O-ring?

Boating season is short. Need to figure things out ahead rather than be waiting for parts.

They can, but it takes a LOT of hours generally. Our '95 Supra still has the original raw water pump.

I will install the new impeller and O-ring. But give it a good inspection first. Maybe the O-ring slipped out of position when I installed the new impeller and I did not notice.

Well I changed the impeller and O-ring today. I saw no reason for any leak. The O-ring was in good shape, had not slipped out of place and the section of the pump that seals against the O-ring looked and felt fine, no corrosion.

So still not sure why the leak occurred.

I put Sil-Glyde on the O-ring.

Is the leak now gone?

I got to working on now thruster and did not have time to start it.

But there is a shaft seal also. That may be it given that the O-ring and outer pump housing both looked good. You pull the entire pump, use a seal puller and tap in a new seal. Or that's what I believe is the process. Have you done that?

No, I've not had to do that, but that sounds like the right process.

So I have not really read too many posts or had people talk about replacing anything more than the impeller and O-ring. But there is a seal and bearing. Maybe not on the same frequency as the impeller but they do go bad.

Or many people just replace the entire water pump.

Or sell boat and get one with outboards.

I think the seal is pretty easy to replace. For the bearing you need a gear puller, pilot bearing puller and a press to press the bearing back it.

Yeah, we just ended up replacing the whole pump on the Four Winns (well, the marina did, they were doing the exhaust manifold replacement and changed the pump as well, I try to avoid working on that boat, lol).

I qualify this opinion as being labeled a dummy but personally I like the Volvo pump system more than Mercruiser. My Four Winns had the Volvo 351 Ford. Quiet, smooth, efficient, and fast. A 24 ft bow rider is too much boat for just me. Everyone quit going to the lake with me. Wife-“too hot”. Kids-“going with so and so doing this and that”.

My Volvo Penta is a FWC engine with a cat. I will need to take out second mortgage if I ever need to replace any part of the exhaust system. No aftermarket, OEM only

Here is a picture of the seal. Any damage you see may be from me removing it.

Don't understand the rusty look. Nothing should be rusting in that area.

It has a tiny coiled spring ring holding the inner part of the seal against the shaft. It feels old and a little hard rubber.
