Anyone ever hear of anything like this. If there is one .... there must be more. Of course to compound the problem, some moron at dealer told them to only go by miles - not time so 10,000 miles; 16 months on factory 0W20 synthetic under severe service (short trip) guidelines. Comments? Theere must be some explanation as to why the motor didn't quit functioning. If no oil filter; engine is toasted ..... or at least partially roasted. http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/104-5t...oil-filter.html

Id not be that worried about no filter. While the first OCI is probably the most important one to have something in there, if all that we hear about engines being so clean and following the regular OCI from the factory is true, then I see little requirement for a filter, quite frankly. In fact, I wonder if down the line we will see engines without a filter, perhaps just a screen. 16 months is OK time-wise, IMO if other constraints are handled well. Ive seen no issues with it, verified by UOA, on my saab. Is there an OLM in that car?

Check This Out: {removed link due to political comments} But why post a link from January 22, 2010? Your point is?

I've seen a few UOAs with the Toyota 0w-20 that had higher than normal wear numbers and lower TBN figures when used up to the 10k mark. I'm sure those are just exceptions to the rule though. Call me old school but I personally would never go that long on any oil except for maybe M1 EP or Amsoil SSO.

Did you even read the post you linked? There never was a Camry with no filter. There was an idiot tech who had never worked on a canister filter before.

During break in? No oil filter? I'd not be happy at all. When I changed my oil for the first time (like 500 miles) my oil filter looked like it had been filtering glitter!

How's this sound?: The supplier of the filter housing messed up and didn't install some of the inner workings or a filter element. When the housing is attached to the engine at the factory, they don't open every one to be sure there's a filter in it, so they just filled the motor with oil and away it went. The OP stated that he brought the car to the dealer for its 5,000-mile service, but that they didn't change the oil. On a brand new car, I would have changed the oil early regardless of the owner's manual or the dealer's questionable advice (go by mileage only?!), so the missing pieces would have been found a lot sooner, but as long as there was proper oil flow to all the right places, I'll bet no major harm was done in this case.

Here is a more likely scenario. In that post OP said that the tech and service manager had to take the housing from another car, so now we have yet another car with missing components. What are the chances that something similar happened to this Camry and the dealer forgot to re-install the parts prior to delivery? I say very high.

And a lot of people thought those late 80s Iron Duke Pontiac 2.5s had no oil filter....(it was inside the oil pan)...

shocked So changing the filter requires dropping the pan?

The filter mount was part of the pan drain plug, IIRC. If you took off the drain plug, the filter came with it. I think the filter was part of the pick-up tube. My dad had an S-10 for a while when I was growing up. I remember changing the oil with him, but that was almost 25 years ago now.
