..btw- is GM still coming out with their "throw away" diesel (which I'm sure it will be)? Plenty of them in Europe too, but we had to wait until they can reinvent the things for our consumer market.
True, in order for us to get a good car like that, they first have to dumb it down by adding weight and plenty of unneccessary stuff (power windows, steering, locks, big back seat, etc). No, we cannot get the same good version that the rest of the world has. Im willing to bet that it will weigh more, be bigger for us Americans and get less than 40mpg.
Years ago 40mpg was easy and now only hybrids and the Smart car (yuck) get the 40+ range.
But its probably our fault for not buying the gas misers. You have to try one before you knock it. I used to be all about the power (Z28) then sold it and bought an economy car(Aspire) and realized it is more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow added to the other benefits of an economy car (mileage, reliability, short wheelbase and lower weight means better handling.
A economy car is the best candidate for a FWD configuration and IMO should be the only kind of car to be FWD. BIg I4s, V6s, and V8s should never be transverse mounted, but a mechanic once told me that is the way it is because it is easier for the automakers to install a FWD machine than fool with a driveshaft and diff..
