Gang,

Here is UOA #20 on my FX4. I attribute the increase in iron to two things:

1 - This is the longest run (based upon time) that I have had to date (11/27/13 to 08/31/14 is 9 months) and it includes the winter season.
2 - There was about 4400 miles of towing in this run.

If you compare this run to the one of 04/13, you will see the winter time and towing making an impact on the iron there too. While I realize that Houston winters are not overly cold, the ones in Colorado are and we typically spend a few thousand miles there during the winter.

At any rate, I continue to be very pleased with the results of M1 AFE in this engine. M1 0W-20 EP replaced this run along with another Fram Ultra and I plan to run this combination to 20K. I removed the older UOA results because the post is becoming too wide, but for those coming in late, PU was all I ran prior to MS5K with OCIs varying between 5K and 7.5K during the warranty period. Blackstone comments below; enjoy!

Blackstone Comments: The TBN held steady at 2.9, though the TAN increased just a little to 5.3. That's still not overly acidic, and wear metals continue to look pretty good in this sample. Iron is a little higher, showing some steel wear, but this reading still isn't bad at all. Remember, average iron for this engine is 20 ppm after about 5,800 miles on the oil. We'd say on a ppm/mile basis, this reading is excellent, even though it has increased. All other wear continues to look good and no contamination was found. Try going up to 16,000 miles next time. Nice engine!

Way to go Mobil 1! Proves once again, Mobil 1's ability to protect an engine. Nice looking report.

Thanks for sharing.

I for one applaud you fx for actually acquiring the data, and using it to extend your intervals as a used oil analysis should be used for.
Thanks for posting. At this rate your engine will outlive the truck it's planted in,and you'll have saved a few bucks, and time not doing needless service because of some dreamy idea called "peace of mind" or "cheap insurance"

Cheers Clevy! One of the other goals is that I hope others can see in a normally operating engine, 3K and 5K OCIs are a fool's errand and oil is much more durable than one would believe. Others should use my investment to help them save some money in the long run as well.

Your investments are much appreciated by me- they have helped me learn and extend my own oci's beyond the 3k/3mo regimen.

Thank you for another UOA on your FX4. 20ppm of iron is nothing to worry about IMO during a 15K OCI. Nice to see you have wiggle room left at 15K.

What do you do reset the OLM twice to then change the oil? I agree with Clevy this "cheap insurance" baloney is just that baloney.

Those numbers are interesting. My observations from a mileage and TBN perspective:

- Your 5 ocis with MS5K behaved pretty consistently as far as mileage vs TBN. For you it seems 10k miles is around the max with this oil.

- Mobil 1 synthetic seems able to go 50% to 100% further than MS5K. This suggests you get something back for paying more for synthetic

- The first oci with M1 / synthetic appears to have not held up as well as subsequent synthetic ocis. Is there any prevailing reason for that?

Exactly.

FX posting this data just keeps adding fuel to the fire for me as far as 10000 mile intervals being fine for my personal applications.
I won't even bother trying to enlighten those who are set in their 3000 mile intervals. They can dump their money any way they choose.
Personally I like money,in my pocket, and I'd rather spend that 100 bucks an oil change elsewhere if I can.
Considering every single vehicle I've owned for the past decade has easily gone beyond 300k,without a single oil or oiled part wear issue I think I'll keep doing what I'm doing.
If I can drive my vehicles into monster mileages and only run half the oil changes we are talking savings in the thousands over the life of the vehicle without any negative effect on performance.

Thanks FX for proving that most of us are dumping money for no reason other than "peace of mind".
More like uneducated or ignorant mind, choosing to ignore data and trust a " feeling"
Now I'm not saying every engines able to run a 10000 mile interval. It's absolutely dependent on how the engine is operated and I firmly believe in shorter intervals if the duty cycle does indeed qualify as severe service however severe service could mean a lot of things.
Which is why I am observant and look for hemi used oil analysis and LS 5.3/6.0 used oil analysis and compare their usage to mine, and make the call from there.

I did reset it twice, but I use the Trip "B" to keep track of the mileage between OCs.

To be sure that we are on the same page, the first OC with M1 was on 11/13 and not 10/13 (15K miles and not 10K). I only sampled at 10K and if there was any issue, it was the first synthetic OC after using conventional oil. Make sense?

Aha, I missed that.

Nonetheless, your second M1 run (sampled 08/14) had a TBN of 2.9 at 15k miles which is way better than the 2.2 TBN you had after sampling at 10k miles (10/13) during the first M1 run.

And you had to top up during the first run, but not the second. Very interesting.

First run of M1 after a conventional; could have been some "incompatibility" that caused a lower TBN and the top up was only needed because I sampled and lost oil otherwise it would have been zero make-up oil.

I really respect you for that, and trust me I'm a BIG believer in BITOG helping me increase my knowledge regarding maintenance, my favorite is to use the air filter for longer, plus these UOA have actually encouraged me enough to not worry about changing the oil as often, we use to do every 3000 before!

Iron is a tick higher because you had no top off on this 2nd run which would have diluted the readings a little. Very impressive - M1 0W-20 is good stuff. Thanks for your incredibly well detailed efforts!
