2005 Ford Ranger Transmission Overfill

My son was complaining about a rough shift (like a small shudder) from 1st to 2nd. Curious, I warmed the vehicle up and drove it for about 20 minutes, then checked the fluid level which showed above the fill line. (on the dipstick, it shows about a 1/4 inch above the max fill line.)

My question is would a higher fill level cause rough shifting and how important is it that I bring it down to the appropriate level? All other shift points are fine, and it is only felt on the upshift between 1st and 2nd. Not every time either, sometimes it works just fine.

I have a Dodge so this may or may not be the answer. But I noticed when my Transmission was overfilled it would act funny when it was cold. It would rev and feel like it was slipping and not shift. It only did it when it was cold. I adjusted the level by sucking some out the tube with a feeding tube stringe and now its fine. 1/4 of a inch does not sound like alot of overfill. Id say you have other problems. When was the last time you dropped the pan and changed the filter? Id perform this maintence and see how it works. That 100,000 mile transmission fluid does not mean alot. I change mine about every 30,000 in my truck and wifes Lincoln.

When was the transmission last serviced? 1/4 overfilled isn't too bad. If the transmission was recently serviced I would suck some fluid out with a pump via the fill tube, and add Lubegard Red ATF additive. You can get about 2 qts out using this method, so draw out a little extra fluid and don't overfill. The product works well eliminating shudder problems. Worth a shot.
