Figured this might be of interest. This is the filter out of my son's Yamaha dirt bike that we bought as a smoker, an issue that was unexpectedly solved with the use of @High Performance Lubricants Super Car 0W-40.

This is the first change of the HPL oil, was interested in seeing what the filter caught, and was not disappointed:

Not really sure on how many hours on the oil, maybe 20-30? Son managed to crack the drain plug cover so it's only back together finger tight right now as we wait on replacement parts.

Why you reckon there is metal in the oil now? Is 0w40 wet clutch rated, meaning no moly? Is it shared sump?

best hope those shavings aren't magnetic. You should have no metal in the filter.
And it shouldn't have been fogging like a mosquito fogger either, lol, but it was before this last OCI. I have no idea how frequently the previous owner changed the oil/filter and I didn't get a peek at what the first filter he pulled off it looked like unfortunately, so this is the "benchmark" OCI.

Nope, it's just your bog standard Euro oil with moly. My understanding is that there are several OE Motorcycle oils, spec'd for wet sumps, that have moly in them, and it's not the pariah many make it out to be in these applications.

Given that it burned oil (visibly) previously, I suspect there's some neglect in play. I'll be concerned if material increases over this OCI, but if it tapers off, like I expect it to, then I'll chalk it up to that.

my experience is with Honda only, whereas older ones could have no moly

I looked up a few old VOA/UOA threads:
Honda GN4 has moly
Castrol Actevo 4T has moly
Lucas MC oil has moly
Mobil 1 4T has moly
Yamalube has moly
BMW bike oil has moly

So it seems to be pretty common?

Now, the HPL would have considerably MORE moly however. I'll ask Dave if he thinks it's a problem, but I suspect he'll say it isn't.

i remember looking into this before, on my cbr500 for instance, it soecifically said not to use the honda hp4 oil due to its high moly content. what high meant is a mystery. wonder what MA spec is then?
