My dad drives this truck like a little old lady. He doesn't tow anything, and doesn't haul anything heavy. The FL-1A filter is way bigger than the stock filter. With this on the truck I have to add 8 quarts to bring it to full. I did have to add about half a quart of make-up oil during this interval.

Oil Analyzers did the testing; here is their comment cut and pasted: "Base number is below acceptable minimum; Infrared results indicate OXIDATION is SEVERELY HIGH; Infrared results indicate that NITRATION is at a SEVERE LEVEL; LEAD is at a MODERATE LEVEL and may be OVERLAY METAL from MAIN/ROD BEARINGS."

According to their website, they use ASTM D4739 to measure TBN.
I don't know why they flagged lead; 1ppm per 1000 miles seems nice and low.

Lead 'usually' shouldn't be higher than iron - that indicates excessive wear.

With that much TBN left, it looks like the oil should still be good - but with the comments, it looks like the TAN maybe high, and its starting to eat at the bearings...

I think for using an oil filter that is not recommended for extended oil drains, and an oil that was NEVER advertised for extended oil drains, this report looks excellent. I would continue with what he is doing but I would cut the oil changes back to 10K.

I sent in the sample right away, but I waited this long to post it. I have a number of reports I haven't posted yet, trying to get caught up.

I thought that might be why they flagged it. Also, going back over previous reports for this truck, the last 3 had zero lead, so maybe 15 ppm is a big deal. Since the analysis at the top of this thread, I haven't done another UOA on this truck. I think I will do another next oil change to see how things are.

Johnny, would it be wise for someone who is thinking of running Pennzoil Platinum or any other oil out to 15,000 miles, that it might be a good idea to use a different oil filter.

In this scenario would a synthetic media oil filter be better.

Maybe these cellulose media oil filters should only be run to 10,000 miles.

OAI is saying the oxidation is high, yet it's only 32. Tbn is 2.9 but as was said, TAN could be high.

Well I tell you, I really like the Amsoil EaO filters. That's what I use. The Motorcraft filter are great filters but I think 15K is pushing them.

Nice to see some folks actually getting their money's worth with synthetic.

Why not suck out a sample at 10k, send it in and then continue running it or dump it based on your results? I tend to agree that this oil may have been run too long. Seems like lots of lead compared to everything else.

The PP certainly held it's own for a lube that wasn't marketed for this exposure; ditto for the filter. Yet another stab into the heart of the whole synthetic-oil-short-OCI mentality, if you ask me.

Now, that being said, it's probably pushing the limits of this combination too far. 10k miles might be a better "balance point" for this oil/filter. Obviously, UOAs will confirm/deny the logic in this comment.

Makes my wonder why I'm dumping PP at 6k miles? I could probably go an entire year in my Taurus and Villager, up to 10k miles each, with a Wix filter.

I don't think 15ppm of lead in 15,000 miles is too bad. My 99 S-10 would throw off at least 20ppm in 5,000 miles. It's a good report if you ask me.
