I drive a 2003 (took possession in 2002) Ford Expedition 4.6L. Last month I noticed it started smoking at idle. The smoke appears to be a light blue haze, and has a rich smell to it. I also had to add 2 quarts of oil before last oil change, which I never had to add oil prior to this point. It has 110,000 miles. Driving habits for the last 5 years includes, idling between 25-30 hours per week, occasional high RPM (4000-5000prm) acceleration, hard braking at times, and 75% of the mileage is stop and go. The engine is not throwing off codes at this point. There is no noticeable reduction in performance/acceleration. No leaks are observed.
I know it’s a considerable amount of running time on the engine, but I baby it as much as possible. The shop services it religiously to schedule. I am turning it in for service next week to have the burning oil issue looked at.
My question is what could cause such a drastic change in oil consumption/smoking? It was very abrupt, with nothing unusual occurring prior to this incident. I thought PCV, but it seems to be working fine. Any thoughts?
