186,000 miles driving 45 to 50 mph flat road, felt a clunk under the seat to the rear end 6 times in 4 minutes. parked it. checked u joints- no play in them, jacked up one wheel at a time checked rear end play- about 2" at outer wheel.could this clunk come from the transmission- it's like sometime gets in a bind or maybe the torque locking and unlocking?

"It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown!"

Sorry couldn't resist... I had a rear diff shear a tooth or something once on the highway at 60mph. Sounded like a gunshot in the back of the wagon. Since it was a part time 4wd with FWD, I was ok untill I figured out what had happened. Junkyard rear diff and all was better.

Is the Astro 4x4 or RWD? Either way, it should be a 4L60E trans. Not sure how to help diagnose further with info provided.
