I'm having issues trying to figure out which synthetic motor oil to use for my 2001 VR6, I've been told the German oils are far better, but would like to hear from some people who really know what they're talking about. I'm basically trying to find which synthetic is the best value for the money. And one other question is for Volkswagen owners, will the check engine light go on when you reach the millage for your next oil change?, only asking cause mine just came on just after the recommended millage. Thanks in advance for any advice !

That engine in well known for having oil consumption. Here people in the vr6 community most go with 10-40 or some even a 10-60.

If I still had my 1995 VR6, which consumed a little bit of oil, I would use Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w-40. If yours doesn't consume oil, Mobil 1 0w-40 will be my pick, because it meets most of the Euro oil requirements.

Mobil 1 0w40 carries the VW 502 00 spec that your car specifies. It's readily available over the counter and if you find it at walmart you can get it for the low price of around $23 a jug depending on your area. There are plenty of other oils out there if you want to spend more, but this is about as good a bang for the buck that you are going to find.

It can be pretty hard to find approved oils in the US, but its possible. You could get away with using a non approved oil, but i wouldn't want to. For instance Rotella T6 5w40 would probably work, but theres not any reason to use it.

Here is the list of oils you will want to look at.

And here is the rest of the VW Approved oils if your wondering.
