2001 Accord V6 owner's manual says 5W20 for all weather. My 1999 2.3L 4cyl Accord manual gives ranges of different oils based on temperature.

I've been running Castrol GTX 10W30 in the both, but the wear metals are a tad higher in the V6 and I'm wondering if the 10W30 is too thick and I should use 5W20.

Anyone know what they recommend for European Honda 3.0L V6 engines? That usually tells the tale.

I know my neighbors 99 Accord V6 calls for 5w30 in his manual using the oil chart, but says 5w20 on the cap. He uses 5w30.

You could always do a UOA with a 20wt and see the difference just to be sure...

I use 5w20 in our '02 Accord with the 3.0. Iron/copper/lead in PPM/1k miles from this engine are the highest of any passanger car engine I've sampled.

5-20 in my 02 V6. Just run a thicker 5-20. ex. my car seems to like pp 5-20 better than M1 5-20.

If you go to Castrol's website and select Castrol UK (rather than USA) and then select your engine (3.0 VTEC), you find Castrol recommends either Edge (synthetic) 0W-30, or Magnatec (conventional) 10W-40.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Based on the above, I guess it's fine with 10W30. I had a hunch they'd recommend 10W40 in Europe. As we all know the 5W20 is just for EPA.

I may try Penzoil Platinum next go around...5W30.

Heaven forbid that the 20 we oil recommendation might be valid. . .

Well, since they recommend 10W40 in Europe, obviously it's not :)

Yes heaven forbid. Those Europeans are so much more advanced than us dumb old Americans.

With the number of Euro recommendation threads here lately, if I didn't know I'd think this thread was a set up.

I'll continue running 5w20 in my 07 3.0L with no worries of Euro tales. Fairy or otherwise.

How does that negate the (possible, but likely) validity of xW20? It is possible for more than one valid oil choice. You said this yourself with 10W30 is probably ok (i.e. valid).

I made the 10W30 determination based on my 1999 Accord's manual that listed a temp range for oil viscosity. Something the 2001 did not. In the 99' manual I think it only rated 5W20 up to like 90*F if memory serves (but is a little fuzzy). The 10W30 and 10W40 were rated for temps over 100*F.

My '02 Accord owner's manual has a chart on page 251 that ranges from -20°F to 100°F & 5W-20 is recommended off the chart on the min & max.

I run a straight 30wt in my '06 TL. Nothing to worry about with the 10w-30. I would stick with it.

Yep, mine has the same thing which seemed fishy to me since my 99' has various viscocities based on temperature. I think the 5W20 is an EPA thing as my 2009 Dodge Challenger manual says 5W20 as well with the 5.7L V8, however previous year vehicles with that same engine stated 10W30.

I'm probably gonna switch to 5W30 in the Challenger next oil change. The SRT8 version Challenger with the 6.1L motor requires 0W40 and comes with a gas guzzler tax when you buy the car. Makes you go hmmmmmmm considering the 6.1L is just a punched out 5.7L motor.
