I can't comment on the engine or trans but I will say that maintenance items such as heater hoses, lower hose and especially the heater core are an enginering disaster!

The 4.2L V-6 had major problems with gasket leaks in the 97 and early 98 models. I THINK they fixed it by the 1999 model year. I have a V-8 so I can't speak from personal experience, just from what I've read on 3 different Ford truck sites. I however do have the 5 speed manual transmission in my 2002 F-150 and I also had it in my 1989 F-150. It's the same 5 speed as on the 2000 you're looking at. Other than less than stellar shifting quality, ie grinding and clunking, the major weakness is the clutch slave cylinder, which is weak and leaks. Unfortunately to replace it you have to drop the transmission. It's not cheap to do. In my 1989 truck I had to do it 2 times in 100,000 miles. And the person who has the truck now is having the same problems. So it will have to be replaced soon again. I had hoped that by my 2002 they had come up with a better slave cylinder but unfortunately from what I'm now reading they didn't

! But in all honesty other truck owners have not had the leaking slave cylinder. So I guess it's the "luck of the draw". I'm praying my 2002 is a "non leaker"

I went to my local ford dealer yesterday like i always do when i have nothing else to do and i saw a 2000 ford f-150 with a 4.2L V6 and 5 Speed trans. Not just your typical work truck but this thing was fully loaded with almost every option. Now Im a Chevy guy by heart and Know almost nothing about Fords but they have a killer deal on this truck. Are these Trucks with a 6 and a Manual trans Good? what about power? and Fuel economy? Does anyone here have a truck like this and what are your thoughts about it. Thanks

IMHO, the V6 is under powered for a full size truck. The manual transmission will help a bit with power, but it still lacks power.

They feel good on a test drive, but I don't know anybody who ever bought one that didn't regret not going for the small V8.

If you baby it, the fuel economy may be better, but if you try to get that extra little bit of power, the engine has to work hard, sucking more gas than a small V8.
