2 Toyota 90915-YZZN1 Cut Open - 4.5k mi / 30 minutes of BG EPR

fantastic,

I've seen Purolator Boss filters at my local Advance Auto Parts. They go for about 16 dollars on average where as the Fram titanium goes for $12.50, never used them before, I did see a few here and at youtube that they have great media assembly build quality with micro glass media and polymer mesh backing. The asking price is a bit high, even the K&N and Mobil 1 ones are close to 20 dollars per filter which is insane.

Just secured a case of 6 FS3600 Titanium's from a Carquest at far side of town today with a 15% advance auto discount, all wire backed with A01053 marked on them. My family garage is all set for a long time since we all run Toyotas. Need to get a new ammobox lol.

Wow, old stock (date code is the 105th day of 2020), but they should be fine if stored in a dry environment.

I did check all of them individually, they still have a thin film of factory lubricant coating on the base plate and not completely dry or signs of rust. Should be fine as the ammo box they're stored in have an air tight waterproof gasket seal on around the edge of the ammo can lid with large packets of silica gel desiccant.

Those work too & great score! Reliability is there so you win.

Looking at these oe Toyota filters I’d feel confident running a fram extra guard in their place. Though I’d much rather a tough guard for a few extra bucks and those few extra pleats.

The Carquest guy did say they have more factory boxes available in the backroom depending on their date code I might get another case. I like how the discount reward program stacks up so its a win win and on top of that you get a shell gas discount.

Used to run the orange cans on my old Honda, kinda funny that the dealership OEM filters have the same baseplate pattern as the extra guards, never ran them past 3000 miles at the time of ownership running conventional/blend high mileage oils.

Well here's another one that failed. This is one I installed 2K miles ago and decided to pull it today as I do not trust these filters any longer. You can see there are 2 cracks in the resin and the media is pulling away from the center tube. This filter, along with a another one I purchased from a local dealer in Prescott Az. I sent an email to Toyota yesterday with pictures of the failed filter and missed their call earlier today however, they are going to call back tomorrow so I will let you all know what they say. In the mean time I installed a Microguard Select filter which is what I'll be using from now on.

Unfortunate that you encountered this problem too. Seems like they're press fitting these center cores into the media that molded glue ring cracks around them. I also moved on from Toyota filters as well after the same experience; sticking with OG Fram Ultra/Titanium, Donaldson & Fleetguard and haven't looked back. Microgard Select is a fine choice.

I thought I'd update the thread on Toyota's response regarding these defective filters. The woman I was dealing with is the senior administrative officer in Toyota's executive office. She said they contacted Denso to inquire where in their process these filters could be getting damaged and Denso replied with "we won't share information about our processes". Evidently that was the extent of their getting to the bottom of this with the manufacturer. She also told me that they contacted East Madison Toyota's parts dept to have them inspect/dissect some filters. That request was answered with "we found no defective oil filters". She then told me they would gladly accept the rest of my filters back in return for a full refund. My response to her was no thank you, I plan on inspecting the rest of these filters and posting my findings on as many forums as I could. So here are the pictures and you can see that 8 of the remaining 9 had torn resin and pleats.

DENSO is getting sloppy. Guess they felt left out in the internal leaky filter world and came up with their own version.

Can't believe that everyone expects a $5 - $10 mass produced oil filter should/will be perfect. :poop: happens
There seems to have been way less filter defects in the past (except in the Purolator media tearing era), but lately defects are seen more and more, and on filters not normally seen, like these Toyota OEMs. No good reason they should be having defects now because of what they cost.

Older thread, but here's what I found with the latest batch of 90915-YZZN1 filters I purchased from East Madison Toyota. Thankfully I haven't used any from the case yet so I'll be getting an aftermarket filter before the next oil change.

The end of the center tube looks dinged up, don’t remember that on the few I cut open, or in pictures. It may suggest automation to replace hand installing the center tube.
